How to transfer properly without angering my current school?

Is it possible to transfer from my current school(Temple University) to other schools without making them mad? I want to transfer to USC, Georgetown, etc. Let’s just say I dont get into any of those schools, could they still hold my spot or does it vary on schools?

They will still hold your spot. The only way you cant go back is if you fill out a withdrawl form.

To add, most officials and professors I spoke with at my former institution regarding my transfer were pleased to see that I was moving on to “bigger and better places.” :)

In addition, a Dean at my former university was very cooperative and helpful, and happily agreed to complete a Dean’s Report, no questions asked, no nasty remarks, etc.

I’m pretty sure Temple is fairly large, therefore, you aren’t going to be the first student attempting to transfer, and I doubt you are going to encounter feelings of animosity amongst the staff.

Good luck!

I think you’ll be surprised to find that most professors and administrators are actually quite helpful in these situations.

What you have to understand is that most of them did not attend the college at which they now teach/work, and any “loyalty” they may have must be kept in check by the reality that not every school is the best place for every student.

The bottom line, though, is that you’re paying tuition for services at your current institution, and therefore, they are obligated to help you as far as administrative actions go. Be polite, kind, and avoid verbally denigrating your current institution. If people ask why you’re transferring, try to give the most truthful answer; it’s often a variation on: “While this is a respectable college, this simply isn’t the place for me.”

so it is easy to request transcripts to be sent there, or do u have to do them yourself

You cannot send them out yourself. Pretty much every school requires an official, authorized transcript be sent through the school. But this is routine at most colleges. It won’t be a problem getting this done. Or, more accurately, if you make sure to stay on top of them and follow through, it should get done.

Agree with what others have said.

Don’t worry about your current school being “mad.” The Registrar’s office won’t give a whit that they are sending out transcripts for you.

When you speak to profs to ask for recommendations, don’t diss your current school. That is the only reason I could imagine anyone being mad.

There are numerous valid reasons for transfer and most school faculty and staff respect your particular reasons.

As to Temple “holding” a spot, I don’t see how that would ever come up. You will know whether you have been accepted to a transfer school long before you would “lose” your spot. Go ahead and register for classes as usual at Temple if you haven’t heard re transfer (which you very well may not have based on a lot of school registration schdules) before that time. You should certainly have heard before the next year’s tuition is due.

If I’m wrong about that timing in your particular case, post again with the specific timing dilemma and we’ll see what suggestions we might have.
