How to tutor a freshman in SAT?

I’m a senior in high school and I was asked to tutor a freshman guy in SAT Writing. I got a 790 on mine but I don’t really know how I’d teach it to him? I always thought you could improve by reading a lot haha
Any help? How did you guys learn it?

Have him practice writing a lot of essays. For the multiple choice part, you could reference Barron’s writing guide. There’s a lot of grammar rules to learn, but you can easily bring up your score if you learn them. Other than that, I’d agree with you that reading a lot helps too.

painty,
I made up a set of SAT prompt like prompt themes to make writing assignments off of when I was tutoring. Here are a few, if it helps:
• Technology- does it help or hurt humanity, how heavily should we rely on it, should we dedicate more resources to furthering it, what drives humanity to invent/create/search, does modern ease of communication make our society better or worse
• Human interactions-, reliance on others, that whole ‘united we stand, divided we fall’ thing, do we learn better from others or from our selves, love as a blinder/motivator, how hate can tear apart communities, who is your hero, can jealousy ever be a good thing/used to an advantage
• Social values/community- is cosmetic surgery okay, is being impolite ever okay, does reality tv accurately reflect real life, does our society put too great an emphasis on beauty/wealth, how is success measured, pressure to conform, will to be independent, is it better to blend in or to stick out, sexual double standards, does our legal system work well, how honest are politicians, just how objective can a human be, should we prioritize safety above all else, are women more fettered be social mores than men and how is the reflected in politics/family life, social status, economic dichotomies of rich and poor, does wealth make one more happy, which is more important, the demands of consumers vs. the dreams pf artists and creators,
• Human nature- nature versus nurture ( use BF Skinner!), how much choice do we have over our personalities/ successes/ failures, can we truly ever become who we think we are or who we hope to be, how much do we need others, is it better to learn with/from others, how difficulties make us stronger ’that which does not kill me makes me stronger’ , how we deal with defeat ,what is the breaking point for most humans does independence lead to new experiences or tragic isolation, is creativity a product of free time or necessity do wee value things that are free or come at greater cost more
• Animals- to we give too great an importance to animals, animal cruelty, how are humans and animals alike, what sets humanity apart from animals
• Victory/winning/loss- is a win worth the struggle or cost to the losing side, does one lsos permanently set you back, can losing sometimes be more beneficial in the long run, does loss instill strength of character, who declares a victor, how is the same battle perceive by both sides, the necessity of bravery in accomplishing great things, conquering uor fears, how intelligent preplanning pays off, examples of true courage is it better to sek or avoid challenges
cheers!

Wow thanks!
I guess I’ll introduce him to the grammar rules as well

Moooah - great list of themes - thank you
