How to unlock DVD Region Code for MAC

I travel back and forth between Latin America and the US. I am not a big DVD watcher on my MAC, but occassionally have done so. I just tried to watch a new DVD someone bought me, and I got a message saying the DVD is made for Region 1 (which is North America). It said I could use the dialogue to reset my region, but I couldn’t find it, so I assume I am locked out (according to what I have read, you could only change it 5 times, but I don’t remember every changing my region). I installed VLC media player, and I was able to play some older DVDs that I have purchased few years back. The new DVD won’t even stay in the disk, it would eject itself after few seconds.

Can anyone helpe me with this? I am running MAC OS X

If it’s something you do only occasionally and it’s not too inconvenient or expensive maybe you can get an external DVD player with the other region and use it to watch the DVDs from the other region code. Note that I haven’t done this so it may or may not work.
