Hello, I am looking at taking a computer Certification class at New Horizons in Indianapolis. I have a few questions. First, how do I use my a Pell Grant? I’m sure New Horizons takes Grants because I looked at taking classes years ago. Second, do I get the remainder of the Grant after the class cost? Will I ever have to pay the Pell Grant back? Do I have to pass the class? (Or pay it back?) How do I get the remainder of the Grant? Also, I will finish my FAFSA and call New Horizons. Please reply with instructions. Thanks
How do this work with a 5-day Certification class? (No semesters or degree at end?)
“You withdrew early from the program for which the grant was given to you.
Your enrollment status changed in a way that reduced your eligibility for your grant (for instance, if you switch from full-time enrollment to part-time, your grant amount will be reduced).”
Federal aid has rules, ask the financial aid office at the school if you qualify for a Pell Grant or federal student loan for this class.
I don’t know if a certificate counts as being degree seeking, and usually you have to attend school at least half time or 6 credits to qualify for federal grants or loans I believe.
Are you working and going back to school? Does your state offer aid? Do you have an office of vocational rehabilitation in your town? Can they give you financial assistance?
In MA the unemployment office will help with classes like this if you are unemployed. They also help UNDERemployed workers. My underemployed S was able to get help from them a couple of years ago. It is worth a quick search online to find out if your state offers that kind of assistance.
At this time, students must be enrolled in a degree seeking program to receive Pell. I do not see any results when I input the search term “financial aid” in the site search on New Horizons Indianapolis website. You can call them to be sure, but I don’t believe you can receive federal aid for their programs.
