How to use ASSIST to transfer to a community college

My brother is planning on transferring from Cal State Bakersfield (CSUB) to a community college: either San Joaquin Valley College (SJVC) or Bakersfield college (BC). He was kicked out of his first major after being so close to completing it, so instead completed a B.A. in another major. However he now wants to complete his original major, but now at a community college. When he applied to BC, they said they would accept all his courses However, SJVC refused to accept many of the necessary pre-requisites.

He was confused and distraught over this refusal, considering they were both semester-system colleges. Did SJVC make a mistake? Or worse, is it possible BC made a mistake and no one will catch the mistake until it’s too late? So I offered to use ASSIST to figure this out…

The problem is that I can’t find an option in ASSIST to transfer from cal states/universities to community college. I found SJVC’s articulation information here ( http://static.sjvc.edu/_downloads/docs/ArticulationFAQs.pdf ) ; they recommend using ASSIST yet ASSIST doesn’t even list them, from what I can see. Furthermore I can’t seem to find information about IGETC on the linked website which should apparently have the information

Could anyone help us?

Your brother needs to speak directly with the transfer admissions officers at SJVC and BC. They are the people who can tell him which credits can be used at each place.

Each place gets to decide for itself which courses transfer. If one will give him more credits than another, and he can finish up more quickly at that place, well then that is where he should study.

Both my brother and I have had experience with advisors messing up. For myself, I’ve had two advisors say things and then going back on there words years later and denying what they’ve said to cover their butts. And for my brother, the nurse advisor who is in charge of who’s accepted originally told him that he had nothing to worry about, that he was a lot better than most applicants and that students from CSU’s have no problems being accepted into their program… but then months later and after he applied, rejected him saying that the pre-requisites for CSU nursing weren’t good enough compared to their “fast-paced” semester system. So in the case of BC which is also the semester, we’re afraid they may be telling him he’s fine now, but change their mind after he’s already enrolled.

Our state requires that colleges and universities are transparent about the articulation process, if I understand correctly. I just want the resources to figure it out independently, whether it be ASSIST or elsewhere.

It is possible that what was stated originally was accurate at that time, but then the policies changed. When you do meet with these people again, get everything in writing. Don’t trust what is said verbally. Email the person afterwards, re-state your understanding from your previous conversation, and ask for their confirmation.
