So I am currently taking a class with a tough professor, whom I have taken two classes with before. He is really tough and has that intimidating factor when you try to talk to him. I have not done so amazing in his past two classes, but I am determined to get an awesome grade in this class because it is possible. I want to get into structural engineering, and this guy is the main professor who specializes in that field. Therefore, I really want to get on his good side and acheive a high grade in the hopes of getting a good recommendation letter. Any ideas how I could win him over? He is actually a really good professor, he is just (at least for me)(intimidating to talk to one on one. Frankly, I always feel a tad awkward talking with professors because I am a pretty laid back person and I always feel so forced to act so professional in front of a professor. Any tips? I appreciate any help.

Don’t stress, they are regular people just treat it as such.

When you go to his office hours, leave some money ($100-$200) on your seat. Also, professors love chocolate, so buy him some. I’ve heard of some success with baking cakes…

Continue to do well in the class. Visit during office hours and ask questions that go beyond what was covered in class. Let him know about your interest in the field.

If you do decide to buy them chocolates, be sure to add a couple of drops of LSD to maximize the effects.

haha thanks for the advice…

Any other suggestions?

If he’s an old crotchety professor, find out which unacceptable social beliefs he still retains from his youth. You’ll be selling your soul, but dropping a “did you hear about the silly ________?” question could go far with him.

they LOVE to talk about their research. The older they are, the more mystified they are by their own work.

I hope I don’t end up like that.
