How to write about something you love and also write about yourself?

I am drafting an essay for the common app prompt “Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content, etc.” The first thing that came to mind is [trampoline], which is typically not considered seriously as a sport. (Not actually trampolining, but another obscure sport.) I think I have an interesting lead-in, but how to subtly connect this to myself? I don’t want to use the clunky and slightly untrue, “[Trampolining] requires both discipline and freedom, blah blah blah give examples of me working my ass off and loving to work hard.” I don’t honestly enjoy training my ass off–it hurts!!!

I love my sport because of qualities inherent to the sport itself: how every detail matters, how beautiful it is when everything comes together, and because of the people who play the sport and how crazy and anal they are–but do I really have to SPELL OUT that these qualities appeal to me because they’re probably found in me as well? My dilemma is that right now my essay sounds like an editorial serenading the sport–a passionate editorial, good to read, but if I force myself in it might be destroyed completely.

This is kind of a convoluted question. Thanks for advice!

bumppp!!! I’m in the same boat as you are. That’s why I feel like the place prompt is both the diamond in the rough and the trap at the same time; I don’t know whether you can tell enough about me from my essay. If you could maybe post an example part or sentence maybe it’ll be easier to judge?
