how to write "why chicago"

so…i’ve never actually visited chicago…but lately, but parents have gotten into it and they really want me to apply there. and i’ve taken a fancy to that idea. i shall be applying EA…i wish i had visited chicago over the summer, but didn’t…and now, its getting a bit hectic with the school year and all…so i was just wondering…how to start this essay? could anyone direct me to some specific resources?

Visiting is definitely the best way to get legit reasons for why to apply. Honestly, before I visited Chicago, my reasons for applying were as follows : I like the band Chicago, Chicago has good pizza, Chicago is a great musical, and John Dillinger was from Chicago. That was it. I still remember the looks on my guidance counseler’s face when I said that. She rolled her eyes a bit and basically slapped the plane ticket into my hand (Not really, we still had to pay and everything! :P)

Coming back, I was completely transformed. I had solid reasons for why I loved the University of Chicago. Ofcourse you don’t seem to have this opportunity so I’ll cut to the chase or so they say…

I have about two schools that I’m also applying to that I have not visited. This does not mean that I have no idea about them and I’m applying willy-nilly, however. Make the effort to read the website, and when you tired of that, do what you are doing and get involved with the message boards. Feel free to ask us any questions about the school that may concern you, or in general just peeked your curiousity. See, you’ve already done the first step! Secondly, (or whatever number we have reached, I was never that good at counting >.o) and it might sound a bit strange, if you want to see the campus, watch youtube videos. I’m applying to UIUC, and I watched about 30 videos on youtube of people driving around campus, a video of a party, a video of students talking about the college and one that I particularly enjoyed about engineering students singing “White and Nerdy” :stuck_out_tongue:

That is how you can sort of get a feel for the school, and how you can find specific things that you like about UofC. Just be honest when answering, and I’m sure you’ll do fine. I think it’s just for weeding out those who are like “I want to major in business LOL” when they don’t realize that UofC does not have a business major or business track (Or so I am told) Make sure what you say is accurate as well as reflects you. Why do YOU like UofC? Opinion question-no right or wrong!

Hope that helped!

mm, thanks! im thinking medical…well, for sure, medical is more me.but also i know chicago has an awesome symphony, and a pretty good music program (i believe?!) and is very artsy so i can continue my passion for music there more than with most other universities…

any thoughts?

Well I sent ya a message with hopefully what you find to be an adequate response, just in case you didn’t see it yet :)

I applied, wrote the essay, and got accepted without ever visiting.

The closest I had come to Chicargo was when the plane stopped at Ohare Airport

And you know what I was just honest about why I wanted to go there.

I said because I knew it was the kinda school where you can study Chem and Creative Writing without being thought of as strange or unique

I said because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of Milikan

and because I wanted to attended college for more than the knowledge I could get, but for the unique experience that i can get- and that unique experience was at U of C

don’t know if that made any sense or helped any

You can also google it, and check Wiki lol
