So, I’ll try to make this short:

I ended up going to my backup school, but I really loved it a lot. I had two or three really great professors, I loved the small campus and class sizes and intimate atmosphere, etc. The school put on lots of great programs, and I was generally pretty happy my first semester, hanging out mostly with people who lived on my floor.

But for some reason, I became terribly lonely and really, scarily depressed (think “dementors”) in the Spring.
I was still hanging out with people from my floor, and I was getting closer to a few really cool people.

Maybe it’s because I couldn’t get into any classes in my major like 1st semester and so I didn’t have anyone to talk about my passion (Int’l Relations) with during study groups for exams. Maybe it’s because the people I met in clubs – of which I really joined a lot and made a def. effort – didn’t really hang out outside of club meetings and events; a lot of them were upperclassmen with their own friend circles, although I still liked hanging out with them whenever we did run into each other (once every 2-3 weeks?)

Anyway, I was really, horribly depressed, missing my h.s friends greatly. I hadn’t found my niche at all. I’m told this happens to lots of college freshmen. So I made sure this wouldn’t happen my 2nd year by:

getting hired to the newspaper (I loved being on my hs newspaper)

joining this environmental-themed hall, like a club/service group you live with

so I’d be around people who care about the same stuff I care about and people I’d have stuff in common with.

The only problem is, I applied for a transfer to my top choice in high school (GWU) while I was feeling lonely…and I got in!
It’s not the reason WHY I’m transferring…I mean, better program for my major, I’d love being in D.C, etc, I’m just afraid that I’ll spend another year searching for my niche, wandering without an anchor, hanging out with an arbitrary group of people who may or may not be the best fit for me…and I’ll be really lonely and depressed again.

I mean, I’ve pretty much made up my mind to attend unless some unforeseen event happens…I just wanted to know how people find their niche in college, particularly transfer students.

I feel REALLY dumb asking, because I already set myself up to find my niche at my last school…I guess the ugly truth is, when you hang out with just the people on your hall, or a similarly random group like, other transfer students, you might find a few cool people, but I won’t find people who I really have a great connection with like my friends from high school.

I don’t know, right now I’m just hoping that people in clubs at GWU actually DO hang out outside of club events and I can just find good friends there.

I’m also hoping that statisically, I’ll have better odds of meeting people who care about world events the same way I do because I’ll be at a very politically active campus, I just suck at like…being outgoing enough to hang out with people who I don’t live/work with. Maybe it’ll be different, but I don’t know for sure, and I’m pretty scared.

But yeah, any suggestions?
