How tough and time-consuming is AP Studio Art: Drawing?

I’m currently a junior who is thinking about taking AP Studio Art: Drawing next year. I’ve done visual art outside of school for about 7 years. Therefore, I have a lot of experience with drawing and painting, and I’m confident in saying so as I’m in the National Art Honors Society (NAHS) and I got the teacher’s approval of taking the class even though I haven’t taken any visual art classes in high school yet. (Sorry if this sounds cocky, I’m not trying to be lol)

However, I’ve heard many things about this course. The art teacher says students must complete 48 WORKS of drawing and painting by mid-April to sumbit the portfolio. One friend of mine says she always devotes hours of her weekend to finishing artwork, while another says the pace in which you need to complete each piece isn’t so bad…?? Therfore, I have no idea of what to expect from this class.

So let me ask those who have taken this class before,

  1. How tough and time-consuming is AP Studio Art: Drawing?
  2. How many hours on average did you spend on each of the 48 works in order to get a 4 or 5 on the final portfolio?
  3. What do you do in class other than drawing or painting?
  4. What does the teacher base your grade on? / What is your semester grade composed of?

If I decide this it too tough for me, I’m thinking of taking AP Computer Science or AP Environmental Science as an alternative.

I know this is an incredibly long and extensive question… But it would really help SO MUCH if I could get some good, realistic answers. THANK YOU in advance, cheers!
