I heard that NYU is a semi-top school, however, it has wicked competition. How hard is its competition for admissions in reality for specific schools like Stern and CAS?
I have lived in the area my entire life. The population of NY is 8.5 million, then add NJ, which is 9.0 million. A good portion of this area is always a group of immigrants. There is good public transportation in the area. NYU is named after the city. It’s on the east coast so its easy for many international students.

Various programs at Tisch have lower acceptance rates than Harvard or Stanford, with the Film School being one of the most selective undergraduate schools in the country. They weigh talent, in the form of an audition or portfolio, most heavily in admission. Stern is highly selective, as an elite undergraduate business school with access to NYC’s financial sector. The College of Arts & Sciences is not as selective. NYU Poly (Engineering/STEM) is not as selective as, say, MIT or CalTech, but is more selective than CAS. Steinhardt admissions varies by program, with the Art and Music BFA more difficult than the more general programs. Gallatin is “holistic,” and more comparable to “quirky” liberal arts colleges. I don’t think they allow students to apply to more than one division for freshman admission, but I have heard that they will occasionally offer admission to CAS to students who are rejected from more selective divisions. I am not sure whether that is true, though. Perhaps somebody more knowledgeable can answer that.
