How Tough Is Pre-med

For a good university student.

And is it difficult for a good university student to do Pre-med along with Mechanical Engineering

difficulty is a matter of opinion, however I will say that majoring in ME is one of the hardest routes to take as a premed, simply because you have so little room for electives and physics and one semester of gen chem are probably the only prereqs that count towards your major.

enineering in general is not easy. Aslo something like biochem can be really tough as well.

okay…i just wanted to know coz my dad is asking me to do pre-med and i dont want to go to the medical field.

If it was manageable i would probably have taken it but as mentioned above if is is difficult then i think i will chuck the plan.

Well, I’m a firm believer that you shouldn’t embark on a career path (and a long, hard one at that) if you don’t really want to do it - especially if it’s just because someone thinks you should. One great way to find out of medicine is good for you is to shadow a doctor… I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, but after I shadowed a thoracic surgeon, I just fell more in love with the profession.

I think…

Not wanting to be pre-med because it’s a hard academic track: bad reason.
Wanting to be pre-med because someone else thinks you should: bad reason.
Not wanting to be pre-med because you don’t like the coursework: good reason.
Not wanting to be pre-med because you shadowed a doctor and hated it: good reason.
Wanting to be pre-med because you volunteered in a hospital and liked all the different roles that help save lives: good reason.

So, I think you should take a step back and reevaluate your reasoning and goals a bit. I certainly don’t mean that my opinions on why one should be pre-med apply to everyone, but I think they are good general guidelines that many will agree with. Best of luck to you in figuring out an academic and career path that you enjoy!

thanks celestial605…i have decided that i do not want to do pre-med at all.

No offense but I seriously hate it when so many people claim that they are saving lives by being a doctor. Yes, if you are someone like a trauma surgeon, then you are; but GPs saying this is absolute shiz. Half the time GPs look at someone who has a slightly more serious cold, and then prescribes w.e any idiot could figure out what to assign to begin with, or gives them a stronger med. If its actually life-threatening or even mildly severe, they refer them to a specialist who saves lives. So don’t just think that because Grey’s Anatomy’s docs save life that you are if you are a GP.

premed with an engineering major is going to be MUCH tougher than premed with a life science major. I think part of the toughness factor is the university you are at and the type of students you are competing with. However, there are many engineers that make it into med school every year (BDM keeps reiterating that one major doesn’t give you an advantage over another).
