How UCSB Won me over...

I live about one hour from UCSB and for some reason - over the years - i have gotten a fairly negative idea about the school. I applied anyways because the campus is just too beautiful and it’s very close to me. Needless to say I got in, and i went to their welcome day a little while ago.

I … Loved… IT. I found UCSB not only an EXTREMELY beautiful campus, but also very alive while maintaining a serene aura. It’s beautiful everywhere you look. Standing in the bookstoor? The vast ocean is right in front of you. In an aparment facing away form the beach? AWESOME mountain range. AKA, if you’re worried about UCSB being grody…you’re going to be presently surprised.

But that wasnt my problem - Because the campus is so wonderful, I figured “how can their academics and faculty be any good?” This is how UCSB won me over. Walking arond campus, i was able to talk to all the professors just going between classes, and the clubs and kids there are just plain interesting and nice.

When i went to the metting for my major, i was blown away. I’m a computer science major, and they held a seminar for my kind in the engineering building. There were 8 people there ready to take questions. The chair did a presentation, there was a student panel to answer questions, and afterwards, they all stayed after to talk to us 1 on 1. Amazing.

When i went to davis (i just got back) they had ONE lady who was supposed to be at a booth representing the department who wasn’t even THERE.

In conclusion. UCSB Is everything you want in terms of college experience + amazing academics. Bravo.

My brother is graduating from UCSB as a Comp Sci major and he says that for CS specifically the school is very good. I think youll enjoy your stay there, although my brother didnt, but for other personal reasons.

neobonzi I am glad you chose UCSB because it IS amazing and I know you’ll enjoy your experience there. I have had 6 people who I know well go through undergrad school at UCSB and have no complaints, except for the occasional rowdy-ness of the students lol…

Good environment attracts good faculty. A professor who had taught at (prestigious university) once told me that (state omitted) was unsuitable for human inhabitation because the climate was so bad there.

How is the grading at UCSB? I have heard that it can be harsh (grade deflation compared to other schools).
