How (un)popular is Math in the US?

In the UK Maths is really unpopular and there’s a shortage of Mathematicians. However, I’d like to do graduate study in the US and I was wondering whether the US was also suffering from a shortage.

My quick guess would be that Math would be really unpopular in the US since every time I watch your TV programs they always ‘insult’ mathematics and make it look really geeky and unattractive.

Thanks for any answers.

Math is definitely not one of the more popular majors in the US.

So will this make it easier for me to get into Yale’s graduate school for Mathematics?

Last year Yale had 132 applicants for 6 spots…

lol. dang.

I’d say that even though (compared to other majors) there are few people in mathematics there are still thousands for only several hundred available spots in the graduate schools.
