I am currently a mechanical engineering student at University of Iowa with a 3.73 GPA, and I intend on applying for a transfer before the fall 2014 semester starts.

I’m involved with three student engineering organizations, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

I choose not to apply for a “junior officer” position for the AIAA, after the president explicitly stated that it will be mostly email work. Not to mention I wasn’t sure if I had the time to juggle such responsibility when he made the offers available during September.

SAE doesn’t really have an organized leadership other than “President” and “Vice president”. It’s quite informal and has an unsaid policy of, “Find something to do, and work on it.”

ASME’s leadership is also like the SAE, very informal. They organized mostly corporate meetings for engineers from other companies such as Rockwell Collins or John Deere to talk about their careers and etc. But other than that, the ASME doesn’t have the funding to do any projects until spring semester.

My sister has been trying to convince me that even with a 3.73 college GPA, my transfer application would be very weak without the word “Leadership” in any of my college extracurricular activities.

I did have a few managing experiences during high school (running a programming project and co-directing a play that I wrote the script for), but I’m not sure how much weight would my high school activities carry. Also, my high school GPA was a 3.39.
