Well I am getting this wool racer jacket (for men) from Express (it is the Gray one in the outerwear section for those curious) . I wa just wondering how warm wool is in the winter… NYC winter lol. Can I use it on the daily or should I get a overcoat as well for late December? I was hoping the gray Wool one would accomodate for both late December cold and early November cold. I also love the design (would look great with a pair of Blue jeans and a black sweater). Anyway, so what do you guys think? Is it good enough? Again, it is wool and I don’t know much about wool.

I’m new to buying winter lothes as well, and was told spyder jackets are great for winter. nyc winters are supposed to be pretty brutal so I wouln’t think wool could keep you cold enough

Spyder jackets are really bulky and ugly though, plus I like the more casual look of coats

I’m in NYC: wool should be enough. It’s unlikely you’ll be outside long during the winter, anyway. Almost all of my coats are wool and I’ve been fine…then again, I’m used to Plattsburgh winters, so it may not be enough for other people.

It’s better to get one of those “multi-layered” (I don’t know the actual term, sorry) wool coats though.

Hmm ok, I think I will just get both now that I think about it haha.

Cashmere overcoats are the warmest without the heavy weight and looks sharp. Nylon ski jackets are practical.

Look at the tag to check the percentage of wool vs. nylon. The more wool the better. Some labels also sell wool coats with a layer of insulate to make it warmer.

NYC winters are far from brutal. Very mild compared to upstate and anywhere in the upper midwest.

I had a wool peacoat for this past winter and I was actually very pleased with the warmth. As long as you wear a hoodie underneath on the most bitter days with your typical winter accessories you should be fine.

You’ll be fine in wool. Just make sure the coat isn’t so close-fitting that you can’t layer up underneath. When it gets cold, I see almost everyone in black peacoats (guys and girls). I also see a lot of people with North Face jackets (the kind with the fleece sweaters inside), which are better for rainy days.

Yeah thanks for the help guys, I decided to get both the gray wool racer jacket for the fall and a black coat for the winter

That jacket sound hot! lol and stylish. (sorry I’m a girl who’s not used to guys dressing so well) Wool would be fine with the appropriate hat, scarf, and gloves deal but it really depends how heavy it is. Everyone says it’s fine so I won’t suggest getting like a down coat, although that’s really safe option. I have obsession with fall/winter coats/jackets ha ha!

Am I the only one who thinks wool is really itchy? Just thinking about it makes me want to start scratching

I mean, I have a wool jacket and the inside is lined with a different material So it’s not itchy…at all…

Aaand wool is super warm paired with sweatshirt, gloves/scarf. But you can’t wear it in the rain, it messes it up. So hopefully you have a jacket to wear in the rain/snow, too, cuz unfortunately they don’t cancel school for downpours.

Also, I have a ski jacket for those super cold days and I live further south than New York. At first you’re like, oh, ew, not stylish, but then you wear it and you never go back. It’s worth it for the walk to class. Plus some of them (especially on guys) look very stylish, though they tend to look bulky and stupid on girls.

i vote for cashmere

I’m sure you’ll be fine. I don’t even wear peacoats. I’m coming to the city this fall with two leather jackets and I just plan to layer underneath and toss on a scarf, hat, and gloves.

Mom here who has spent her whole life in the NYC area: Wear a hat!!! That’s the secret. You’ll be fine in a wool peacoat or anything else you’re considering, as long as you wear a hat.

I do the same. Scarf, Hat, Leather coat and light under-jacket (Cotton is fine) are an excellent.
