How well known is Kenyon?

I’d like to preface this post by saying I am not stuck on prestige. However, I think the reputation of a school does hold some water. Kenyon’s reputation, to me, is fantastic. I grew up with a father who graduated from Kenyon, so I have always known about this great school tucked away in rural Ohio. Most rankings list Kenyon as being amongst the top liberal art colleges and The Princeton Review college guide awards Kenyon with a fantastic academic rating. I know Kenyon is a great college, but how will an employer react to seeing Kenyon’s name? That is, will he or she likely register the caliber of school it is?

I see myself attending graduate school in the future. I assume that Kenyon will appear well on applications to these future institutions?

Thanks!

Kenyon grads go to many top grad programs, so no problem there. As for employers, I suspect that it will be a regional issue…where do you hope to work? The one thing you never lose is the quality education and experience of Kenyon, something that will show in interviews and on the job work.

It is a regional issues. The college has a solid network, but if you’re talking about the chances that a random human resources person will know the name Kenyon in California or Florida, it’s unlikely.

When I tossed out the name of Kenyon to random but educated people as a possible school, not one of more than a dozen had ever heard of it. Several of those people are in hiring level positions.

I am in Southern California.

However, it is possible that a determined potential employer will do a little homework and find out Kenyon’s ranking, at least. I doubt it, but it is possible.

Never have name recognition problems with USC, at least in California.

Will it make you happy to attend? If so than go and plan on going on to grad school sooner than later and your name recognition problem is solved…
I would never advise someone stay away from a school that they think would make them happy.
