How/when do matriculating freshmen choose courses?

First off, good luck to everybody with admissions decisions three days away for us ED applicants. I hope that it turns out alright!

I was wondering when and how exactly matriculating students pick their classes. I would think it would be early-ish in the summer. I know that if I get in I will try to take a moderate/easy first semester so I can adjust [no early classes, no Friday classes ;)].

If any current Duke students have something to share about the class picking process, please speak up! Thanks.

Hey, freshman here. Course selection is done in the middle/late summer depending on what registration window you have. You will be randomly assigned one of three windows. Those with the second or third window are sometimes forced into an early morning or Friday afternoon class. I had the third window so I did have to register for an 8:30 writing class, but it wasn’t too bad. The good news is that your registration window rotates for the next semester, so third window becomes second, etc.

^^Couldn’t have said it better. I was third registration window for first semester, BUT I also had FOCUS classes so I only had to pick two classes outside of FOCUS to register for. That made third registration window a breeze. (No Friday classes!) But if you don’t have FOCUS, third window can get rather ugly.
