how will colleges view two languages?

Hi,

My daughter is a junior and has taken two languages since 8th grade. She attends a highly rated public school, her teachers seems to think she an unusual aptitude for language and has managed a 100 avg in both courses every year. Her overall GPA is floating between 97-98 but, if one were to remove the two language courses, it ranges down quite a bit.

I know each college will have a different practice but, is it likely one or both language courses will be removed when admissions recalculates her gpa?

tia!

Language courses are generally considered academic courses, so most colleges would not remove them when recalculate a GPA.

Every school is different. Look to each school’s website – some schools say what they use for their GPA recalculation, others don’t.

Agree with @mathmom; foreign language is a core subject in most cases, so if the college recalculates GPA, it is unlikely that FL’s would be excluded.

Foreign language is a core course and will always count at selective, 4-year colleges. Getting to level 4 or AP in two foreign languages is considered quite impressive by the way. Will your daughter consider one of the Language Flagships for critical languages?

Agree language is always a core and they will think to themselves…“here’s a kid who likes learning a foreign language.”

thanks all,to answer myo’s question, I don’t think she’s all that interested in language. it just happens to be something she’s good at. we’ll definitely visit middlebury which I understand has a strong language program.

Not all colleges recalculate.

Critical Language Flagship programs allow for the development of very high proficiency in a language for non language majors - she could major in business or engineering and have classes taught in her language in the subject.
