I’ve asked a similar question on another thread but it didn’t receive much response… so I’m asking it differently.

In the beginning of spring, I am going to Honduras with people from a hospital in order to deliver medications and take care of people there. I am interested in going to Medill school of Journalism at NU. I was thinking that I could take pictures that told a story, and take a journal in order to write what happens to me on a day to day basis. Then write a story, and if it ends up being large enough of an issue, sending it to local news papers (last part is a bit of a stretch).

Would this help my admission chances to Medill?

If I were to chance myself, at this moment I would say NU is a low reach. I haven’t taken the SATs or ACTs yet, so thats why I don’t really have that good of an idea. My HS GPA will be around a 3.7 UW, idk weighted yet, or rank, or honestly really anything other than my GPA, and ECs which are strong. But by this fall, I will have everything done, in time for ED.

Every experience can shape who you are, and how you present yourself to the world, and by extension, your college applications.
Keep working to keep your GPA up-maybe even higher? And, if your high school offers AP classes, are you taking advantage of their availability? There are several components to a strong application. As you do not yet have your test scores in SAT or ACT or any APs, it is difficult to say if you are a competitive candidate at this juncture.
Which may explain why you do not have any responses to your inquiry.

Honestly, I don’t think it would help you just because helping others is more “Noble,” than joining a club for example. Adcoms know that some people just have different opportunities than others. Whose to say that most people wouldn’t go if they had the opportunity, see what I mean? If you can emphasize what you learned from the trip, then that’s a whole different matter. Just remember that adcoms want to accept people who can learn from their experiences and people who have taken advantage of every opportunity that interests them(aka, do things that relate to what you want to major in). If you can do the journal thing/take pictures/etc. and present it in a non-cheesy way on your application, then I would say it would definitely help you. (BTW, for knowledge about applying, you can submit pictures of your trip with excerpts from your journal to the common app. You just need to make a document, pdf, or w/e and upload it. That’s what I did. hinthint*)
