I applied to MCC for the fall 2018 and i want to live in a dorm but i have a bit of a problem. Im currently unemployed and i only have $200 to buy supplies for my dorm and/or to get to the college. I was thinking maybe i would take the traveling bus there which is a 6 hour bus ride but how will i bring all my supplies if i had any and how will i buy those supplies? Thanks in advance!
How are you paying for the cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room and board)? The cost of attendance for NYS residents is ~$12k/year for residential students. If you qualify for full TAP and Pell that’s ~$10k/year. And you can take the ~$5500/year (~$2750/semester) federal student loan. If you’re awarded the full amounts it might cover the direct expenses. If there’s anything left over you’d get it in a refund, but not until several weeks into the semester. You’d have to come up with the money for travel and dorm supplies for the fall. If you get a Work Study job, you can use that money as you earn it for personal expenses.
To qualify for TAP (the NYS tuition program) you have to be a NYS resident and meet certain income limits. Your parents’ income will be considered until you’re 35. To qualify for Pell you have to be a US citizen. Your parents’ income will be considered until you’re 24 or meet one of the other criteria to be considered financially independent,
Why did you choose MCC? Aren’t there any community colleges closer to home?
Fall 2018 is a long way off. You need to get one or two jobs.
Im from Long Island, NY and colleges over here is a travel (30-40 minute drive) I don’t have a license and there aren’t any buses or trains here and MCC is the only community college that’s available with housing (easy commute). Im currently staying with family members in Brooklyn and living in their living room
I’m here so I can get a job. I got a email from tap saying I was eligible for 5,000 and FAFSA said I was eligible for 5,000 grant. MCC is 14k for the whole 2 years. SUNY said to wait until I get my financial aid award letter to see what I’m eligible for such as fseog grant, pell grant, college grant, etc
I think the costs for MCC are $14k/year, not $14k for 2 years. Tuition is ~$4300/year, fees are ~$700, health insurance is ~$2k (unless you’re covered by your parents), and dorms are $6550/year. That’s ~$14k/year, and it doesn’t look like that includes food.
Full Pell is ~$5k/year, full TAP is also about $5k/year, and you can borrow ~$5500/year. That’s ~$15k/year, but you’d still need money for food, travel, books, and dorm supplies. How will you pay for all of that?
I think you need a good backup plan. Have you looked into the CUNY schools?
Yup but neither of them have housings and the ones that do have housings doesn’t have my program.
