I qualified for Chapter 35 of title 38(Survivors & Dependents Assistance though the Department of Veterans Affairs), and was wondering how much it would offset my financial aid when I receive it. From it I should receive full tuition for my undergraduate degree, and close to $1,000 a month.

I will be attending UVM and just got my letter telling me how much I would receive a year, as [Federal Pell Grant - $2,000], [Trustees Scholarship - $4,000], [UVM Out-of-State Grant - $13,615] for a total off $19,615 in grants. Other than tuition, I should need to raise about $15,000 for my other expenses.

Thank you so much, for anyone who can give me any information on this.

If your GI Bill benefits give you enough money to pay full tuition, the other scholarship/grants can be applied to your room/board costs, etc.

What is the total Cost of Attendance of UVM as an out-of-state student? That is, you have $19,615 in grants and (if I read the documents correctly) about $9,000 in GI Bill DEA money. Now add those together and subtract from the total COA… and what’s left is the gap (if any). You can also borrow $5,500 in Stafford loans your freshman year.

Also, these benefits may be counted as income, which could affect your eligibility for need-based aid next year. You need to contact UVM’s financial aid office to be certain of their policies.

“Your UVM need-based aid may need to be reduced to fit your GI Bill benefits if the following are true regarding your financial aid award:
You are receiving some form of UVM need-based aid as part of your financial aid package.
Your full need (cost of attendance minus expected family contribution) is already being met by UVM and federal need-based aid.”

^Yes, typically any school will take away the amount of institutional need-based aid that is equal to what you would receive under VA benefit. For example, they would FIRST apply all your VA benefit towards you first term and if there is any left over from the maximum you are eligible for, then it will roll over to subsequent terms for that year. If your benefit amount runs out then that is when they start to apply need-based aid, which they know will now be less because you were able to use your GI benefits.

It sucks because sometimes (for times when the GI Bill doesn’t cover 100% of COA, like in-state) all the GI Bill becomes is the gauge for schools to know how much less need based aid they need to provide to you to cover COA effectively taking away from you the need based aid you would have otherwise received.

ALL PAYMENTS FROM THE VA ARE CONSIDERED NONTAXABLE INCOME.
