For current students who may have experience with this, does Emory decrease the amount of grants they give you when they consider your Pell grant (like if your Pell grant is the full 5.55k, they decrease your institutional grant amount by 5.55k), or will it just be added on top?

Emory ensures that all sources of aid combined meet your demonstrated need (as they calculated it). Thus, the amount of grant money they give you is contingent on all sources. They can’t just calculate how much money you need, give it to you, and then add the Pell Grant on top of that–they’re not allowed to give you an award that exceeds the cost of attendance.

It definitely will not be exceeding it by any means. My custodial parent’s income is low enough to ensure having the 5.55k, but my noncustodial parent’s income (which is very weird/changes every year) is much higher.

So if they’re offering me 31k in grants, when Pell grant is considered, the institutional grant will be lowered to 26k and then the Pell grant included to keep it at 31k?
What about the cases of Pell grant refunds, when your total award ends up exceeding the cost? Obviously that’s been added on top, to get a refund check for the remaining amount.

Since the estimated aid is based on income from two years ago, do you know if the actual is based more on the previous year?

If your need is calculated to be the same and you suddenly receive the Pell grant, I can’t see them doing anything but lowering your institutional aid. The calculated cost of attendance includes certain costs that Emory doesn’t charge you directly, such as travel, books, etc. If you receive a refund, it is not supposed to exceed that amount.
