…a degree in Computer Engineering from UMD (Honors College), UVA, or Carnegie Mellon. I really want to go to UNC and major in CASE with a concentration in computer engineering. I fell in love with the campus on Friday and I like the idea of small classes and I guess not as much competition if I major in this at UNC as opposed to majoring in engineering at UMD, UVA, or CMU. But as far as applying grad school and looking for a job, would it be better to go to these other schools which have their own School of Engineering or would UNC be a fine decision?

Btw I’m out of state from MD. I’ve already been accepted to UMD and Carnegie and still waiting on my UVA decision.

Just in case you don’t know, CASE is Curriculum in Applied Science and Engineering.

Don’t know about the computer side of the equation, but I am pretty sure that Carolina’s Applied Science Department is NOT accredited. Carolina is pretty much a liberal arts school that has decent Chem/Bio major programs. The UNC System’s science/engineering school is NC State, which I would have recommended you consider applying at, but the deadline was in Feb. Of the schools you mentioned I’m not familiar enough with to give an opinion.

Also, I’m not a rabid Wolfpack fan, or someone who got rejected from Carolina, in fact, I intend to attend UNC next year, but if you are looking for a school with an accredited applied sciences program you should look elsewhere.

Carolina has one of the premier chemistry departments in the country…and the biology department is pretty good too…albeit very big. Carolina tends to be very good in sciences that relate to medicine, whereas NC State is better in applied science/engineering. I won’t go into discussing all the implications of the biology department being as big as it is, but if anybody is interested in my take/experience they can PM me and I’ll get back with them…eventually.
