How would I fair with admissions to these colleges?

Johns Hopkins + Tufts

GPA: 3.5 (dropped due to physical illness which led to hospitalization)
SAT: 1570
SAT II’s: Biology M: 790, Math 1: 770
EC’s:
National Honor Society
Science research club
Started my own tutoring business and employed my classmates
Volunteered at a hospital for 3 years (300+ hours)
Shadowed 2 physicians (witnessed an angioplasty and a herniated disk replacement)

Thanks!

…fare v fair

Does your GPA track (super high → illness = big drop → back to super high? Will your GC write about that?

JHU seems to like grades > standardized tests, and they like do-ers. I’m more used to seeing students with several serious commitments (think Captain of the Crew team and SGA Pres and volunteer work and…).

Where has the rest of your time gone?

My grades suffered because I was diagnosed with a condition called EoE. I have my guidance counselor writing a letter explaining how it affected my schooling

It went from high—>low and has come back up

Tufts probably not. I don’t see Hopkins at all. Does the condition affect your ability to participate in meaningful activities like sports teams, student government, or band/orchestra/theatre? Do you have any demonstrated leadership in school? ECs are very slim. We had some kids with serious physical handicaps at school still participating; one was a timer for a sports team, one played in orchestra, another provided significant help for the drama program, etc. Most serious candidates are advised to drop NHS altogether because it’s hardly an exclusive group (over 100 kids from my school were in it). I certainly wouldn’t put it at the top of the list. Likewise, membership in a science research club counts for very little unless you won/placed at competitions or got something published. And most of all… misusing “fair” in your heading really made me wonder. I get that this is just an informal posting board but still. Maybe you can pin on it Autocorrect somehow…

This should read: Maybe you could pin autocorrect on it

Good scores. So most important will be grades related to your hoped-for major. Electives and misc classes, much less.

Yes, your ECs are light. 100 hours/year at the hospital works out to about 2 hours/week or 10 hours/week over summer. What role? Shadowing is just watching- not doing.

Your school doesn’t offer free tutoring? In general, starting a biz is not a tip.

Look hard at the rest of how you’ve spent timein the last 3 years. Some kids think only “official” activities count. Maybe you have more you can include.

I hope that you are admitted to both of your top choices. Of course, GPA & class rank will require explanations, but I think that you will be fine.

Johns Hopkins is slim, but you have some interesting experiences so it could go either way! Make sure to write good essays. Tufts is somewhat easier, but still a reach and if you write those essays well you’ll have a good shot.

Tufts is definitely not happening. Not sure about JH.

I don’t get why people make definite decisions on chances even though their not admissions officers…

For the same reason other people persist on requesting chance responses from strangers who are not AOs. It’s a way to fill time.
