How would one open his or her own University?

What the title says.

Find about $500M to start…

<a href=“Accepted - Wikipedia”>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accepted

Olin College of Engineering is a fairly recent college. They started with a 400 million dollar grant and a Board of Trustees. You could research their origins and progress.

Are you concerned we don’t have enough Universities now? Given the demographic trends in the US, there may be some existing U’s that don’t exist a decade from now. Maybe you can buy one of those at a discount :)

Brandeis was a fairly recent development and even Duke didn’t really take off until the 1920s, so if you want to see how some top schools can be developed fairly quickly, that should be what you look at. Olin is an interesting experiment, but too new to know the outcome.

And yes, if I were starting a “new” school, I’d definitely look into buying an existing one, there are bound to be more than a few who would trade their name and infrastructure for your name and money.

Are you thinking of “Homeschooling”? If so, I think time (to secure accreditation) is more of an obstacle than money.

Look at the OP’s posting history. It’s “unusual”, let’s say…

So what are the requirements for accreditation? Is there a site to read about it? I originally posted this as a fun thread but it actually seems doable to be honest. I could theoretically buy one of the MANY abandoned supermarkets in my area and renovate it to class rooms with a business grant. Obviously this will be more then 15 or 20+ years in the future before this could happen.

^^
this is sounding like that movie where kids started their own college…Accepted (2006)

Brick and mortar is SO last century! Those abandoned Supermarkets are screaming out to be converted to indoor skate parks with government grants! Besides, by the time you started this, you would be SO TIRED of 18 - 26 year-old kids!

If you must, however, I would think reading the story of University of Phoenix and how it was founded, and watching Accepted, would be a good start. ;)

I was thinking about the movie “Accepted” too.

I don’t know, and I’ll never have enough money, but it always sounded like a blast. I think I’d rather create a college prep boarding middle/high school for first generation Americans that have limited English proficiency - that way it’d be specific to their needs and better prepare them for college. Anyways, I really have no clue, but felt like posting too. Good luck with your university, lol!
