So I have finals in two weeks and my last final is on Tuesday, May 9th. We have to have an RA go through our room before moving out so I signed up for 3:15pm on that Tuesday (the earliest time available). Since I don’t know how long it will take for the RA to go through the room, I told my parents that move-out time would be roughly 5pm. My mom kept telling me that that is too late since she doesn’t want us moving out in the dark. Where I live it doesn’t get dark until 8pm. We only live 40 minutes from campus. Her telling me that is kind of making me mad because something similar happened last year at my high school graduation where we were the first to leave because my parents wanted to go to bed (it was 8pm). Basically, if it doesn’t revolve around my parents, then they make a big deal about it. Sorry for the rant, but I needed to get this off my chest and see how guys would’ve reacted if your parents did the same thing.
Agree it doesn’t take but a few minutes for the RA to check you out of your room. And have your parents come earlier so you can get all your stuff loaded in the car in advance of the RA check-out so you should be able to hit the road by 3:30 or 4. Move out day an be a bit emotional but try to give your parents a break. Remember that after you get home you still have to lug everything into the house so if you can get it all done when it is light out that helps.
It sounds like your mom needs to gain some flexibility. Now that you’re an adult maybe you can find ways to deal with her without it turning into a huge conflict. I guess you’re up for a fun summer. Good luck
If your room is a mess, you might need to clean it up. You can tell your mom to come at 3:30, but explain that they will need to stay until you’ve taken care of anything the RA points out.
You need to have all your things out of the room so the RA can actually see that the room is OK. If your things are gon and you didn’t damage anything, it is a very quick process. If the RA is coming at 3:15, your things need to be elsewhere by then, preferable in the car that your parents brought up earlier in the day.
With finals, will you have time to pack up everything and remove it from your room by 3:15? Maybe move out Wednesday morning since you live so close by.
Thank you for the replies. Again, since this is my first time moving out of a dorm, I had no idea how long it would take for such and such. I think we figured it out although still mad at mom lol.
Get over being annoyed at your mother or you will be in for a long and miserable summer at home. Leaving college can be difficult and emotional so just keep everything on an even keel.
