Congrats @bsmd124 and yeah one of the rules is that we have to complete all electives for a major that isn’t bio
@bsmd124 When did you get your acceptance email? Is it on Monday like everyone else?
Congratulations everyone who got in, does anybody have any idea on the success rate of completion of this program? . I am determined and I am sure of becoming an physician, however when I spoke with some of my friends, they think 6 year program would be unimaginably hectic and people might drop out due to the pressure. Does anyone have any thoughts on this suitation? Though I am ready for the challenge, I would like to get an input if an 6 year program would be unrealistically hard. Any advice or thoughts?
Well idk if this helps but I spoke to a girl that’s in the program right now (2nd year med student) and I asked her the same question. She told me it was challenging, but it was never unmanageable. She said the hardest part was Orgo in the summer.
Thank you so much!! It helped, especially since it is coming from someone who is already in the program. Thanks a lot
Yeah I found out Monday
I know that we are required to take orgo one summer. Does anyone know if that is the first year? And do we have courses the next summer also?
I spoke with a student in her third year that said when she was admitted everyone had to Major in bio. Isn’t it strange that we can’t? Considering the compacted undergrad time it’d be the most efficient way to complete a B.S. and all med school pre-reqs
We do Orgo in between the first and second year over the summer. Then after second year we interview for the College of Medicine and then med school starts that July.
@serene01 I personally think applying the regular route to med school is much more hectic than BSMD. With BSMD you’re asked to keep a pretty basic gpa of 3.5 and get a MCAT score of 504 and that’s it basically. For regular admissions you have to do so much more and go through so much hell to interview all over the place.
Also you get great scholarship benefits with fhe program
Orgo was hard but the MCAT can also be a significant bump in the road. The majority of students who don’t make it don’t make it due to MCAT scores. In some years we have had a pretty low pass rate so MCAT is not something to take lightly but as long as you study hard for it it’s fine
What kind of scholarships have you seen or heard of?
Thank you so much for the input, you surely gave us an insight on what to expect
Is orgo taken during both summer sessions? Or just one?
Is there any group chat for those who got accepted? If not we should make one!
That’s a good idea. But what kind of group chat
I don’t know how to start a group discussion! It’s a good idea
What were your grades like and what type classes did you take ? @ettiejos @serene01 @babidoc @bsmd124
Hi all congrats on your acceptance and hope by now you have settled down well in the program.
Quick question. My son is planning to apply later this year for 2021 start. He’s Asian, so do you think it’s even worth a shot ? Meaning have you seen any Asians get in this years batch ? Thank you.
@helperdad My daughter is currently at Howard and she has a few Asian friends there, including 1 on her full ride scholarship. Your son should “shoot his shot” and apply to the program when his time comes and good luck.
It’s very diverse, race should not be a factor for not applying at all. Good luck
