Hows Math 34A with Cooper?

I’ve been looking over Rate My Professor and the ratings have been varied, I am not naturally gifted at math and was looking to find out how difficult it really is. Another thing is how do I register for CLAS? Do I do it at orientation.

You’ll be fine. Cooper wrote the book you use for 34A/B and is probably one of the best teachers for the class.

You sign up for CLAS at 9am on the first day of class through the CLAS website.

My friends who have taken his 34A all said he was horrible and that he always made mistakes and didn’t what he was talking about.

Is the 34 series in math fine for medical schools that require calculus?

I won’t be able to take Math 34A with Cooper because i’m planning on taking Chem 1A with Van Koppen and both classes occupy the same time slot on the same days. How come the other Math 34A classes don’t have a professor listed yet in the curriculum search and will I be at a disadvantage if I take 34A without getting Cooper?

For what it’s worth…I did fine in his class and I’m not the greatest in calc. Go to CLAS if your worried at all

34 should be ok for med schools however, I’ve heard rumors of some wanting the full year of calc. I had that same issue with Cooper and Van Koppen and ended up taking Cooper with Hooker for 8am Chem1A. I wouldn’t take Hooker though…Cooper is also the only prof for 34A in fall.

So that means the other 34A classes offered, such as 1 offered only 2 days a week instead of 3 with each class going for 1 hour and 15 minutes would be taught by Cooper for sure? I tried looking at previous quarters and that didn’t seem the case.

The Tuesday-Thursday MATH 34A probably won’t be taught by Cooper - just on the face of things, it doesn’t really make sense for him to do that when he’s teaching another section of the same course in the largest lecture hall on campus. I also looked at last year’s schedule, and there was a math teacher I’ve never heard of teaching that Tuesday-Thursday 34A section. Whether you can get that 34A class is largely up to luck, in my opinion… there aren’t many seats in the class.

Oh, and I think Daryl Cooper is the greatest thing… well, ever. I’m really not that good at math, but somehow I did really well in the class. I wouldn’t consider him any more mistake-prone than other math professors (probably less), and I liked his very direct way of teaching things. He does keep playing that silly calculus song as people walk into class every morning, though - it’s called “I will derive.”

If you’re trying to go to medical school, then you should take Math 3 series instead of 34 series. Because 34 is for social sciences and is so much easier than 3. Besides, a lot of the science majors, such as biology, require 3 series.

If I take Math 3A, how is the instructor Bigelow. Also if I take it, it begins 10 minutes after the end of my chem class. Is it possible for me by walking to make it from CHEM 1179 building to MUSICLLCH in 10 minutes?

A BS in Biology doesn’t require the 3 series math…the only major that needs it is Biochem. It really doesn’t matter all that much which one you take in the end.

Even though you can take 34 in the lieu of 3 series for BS Bio, I would still recommend that you take 3 series. 34 is fairly easy and not too applicable to biological sciences and the medical practice. You definitely need a strong math background for physics 6 series that you’ll be taking for your bio major. I do have a couple of friends that got screwed over by taking 34 series, because either they wanted to switch majors or 34 didn’t prepare them well for 3C or other science classes. Just heads up, I’ve heard that 3B is hardest math class for non math majors, but it does have a lot science applications, which can be extremely helpful to your other classes.

I have never taken Bigelow or heard anybody talk about him, so I can’t comment on that. But you can definitely make from chem building to llch in 10 minutes, unless you walk extremely slowly.

Do you suggest I take 3 ABC or can I just take 3A and 3B and take a stats class in my last quarter?

Please don’t take this wrong, but I strongly advise that students not choose their Calculus math series based on the posters on a message board. Use the information on the website, and the information from a UCSB advisor from the proper department.

For the pre-biology program, which is the springboard to all the biology majors, there is exactly 1 of the 9 major options that require 3ABC calculus. That major is bio-chemistry.

From the website, the pre-med reqirements list either Calculus math series as acceptable. I would check with an advisor to be sure that this isn’t changing before basing my decision on this.

If you are sure that you won’t be going into bio-chemistry, and your not doing pre-med, I can’t see any reason to take the 3ABC series. The Physics 6ABC series is not as math heavy as the regular Physics (1ABC). The pre-requisite is 3A or 34A.

Why take a more difficult class when they are weeding out pre-biology students based on GPA. Math classes that are applied to a major like 34AB, can often be more interesting and useful than a general math class as well.
