How's the New Haven culture?

So, New Haven is a port city… how maritime is the culture there? I mean are there boat shops and harbors and seafood restaurants everywhere, or do most people/businesses there ignore the ocean?

Around the school, I think most people ignore it. There is Long Wharf Theater, which has awesome shows and first-rate actors, and it is by the water, but other than that . . . That said, the part of New Haven that’s around Yale is great. Lots of unique shops, lots of great restaurants, and the Shubert Theater, which also has some great shows.

I hope there’s lots of maritime life; but then, that’s just because I love the ocean. =P Either way, it wouldn’t be make-or-break for me, but it would be cool.

Well, you are about 40 minutes away from Mystic Seaport, which definitely has all that stuff. A great outing for a day. Google it. And Mapquest it from New Haven.

Thanks guys.

Also, do you think a lot of Yale students would join a boatbuilding group?

In a word, it’s not.

Post #6 got it right. No seagulls, no ocean breeze.

Yeah, sorry it isn’t at all… at least anywhere close to Yale. You can’t see the ocean, nor do you get the ocean breeze, nor is there anything remotely maritime related around Yale.

but there is a high crime rate in new haven? I mean, a lady who told me that she grew up near yale said the campus is safe, but if you want to go out, you have to go in groups b/c of the crime in the city.

OP: I hope you didn’t write that in your ‘why Yale’ essay!
