Does anyone know what Hoya Saxa really means? I have it as my screensaver, but I really have no clue. Also, what is a Hoya (e.g. Georgetown Hoyas)?

“Hoya Saxa” is a mix of Greek and Latin that literally means “What Rocks.” Many speculate that this refers to the rocks on the outside of Healy Hall. “The Hoyas” really aren’t anything, just a name.

Thanks Dan.

Any time :)

Here’s a link:

It makes sense, because “hoya” in Spanish (joya) means a jewel or a precious stone. So I guess a rock is not far cry from that.

Well the Georgetown Hoya is the dog, it looks like a bulldog or something…anyway the gtown bullldog sticker for ur car is badass

Jack the Bulldog. ;-)… Hoya Hooah! :-P

“what rocks” was referring to the defensive line on the football team… LOL

bring up my post

its a mix of greek and latin

Yeah- that’s already been said.

Calidan: ““Hoya Saxa” is a mix of Greek and Latin that literally means “What Rocks.” Many speculate that this refers to the rocks on the outside of Healy Hall. “The Hoyas” really aren’t anything, just a name.”

How nerdy…what did you do, memorize Georgetown’s history?

actually, calidan was wrong in that post. So he obviously didn’t memorize anything. You two live so close, you could finish this spat with a face-to-face brawl. I’ll produce it.

LOL yeah… he’s just jealous that I got into my early school, and he didn’t. But it’s okay, everything is resolved. Jeez. family matters should never overlap onto CC. :D

And netshark- how was I wrong? Isn’t what I said correct? I’m not really sure, but I thought that I got the general meaning right…

well, my phone call was from a student who was also a tourguide. The football team, way back when, was named the Stone Walls. Some clever latin/greek students came up with Hoya Saxa as a cheer, saying “What rocks” the players are. It all goes back to the team name.

And no need to ho him for not getting in EA.
He might get in RD to Georgetown, and then you’re in some ****.

LOL I really would be in some ****. But alas, he’s not applying! He didn’t like it when we visited! What a weirdo. Who wouldn’t like Georgetown?

George W. Bush

netshark is right…i went to georgetown two summers ago, and the first thing the tour guide told us was how they came up with hoya saxa…but he said it was at a basketball game…w/e, same idea

netshark-- your answer doesn’t even make any sense, boi

:)

about Bush? Well, I don’t know if he could handle the intellectual stimulation of a Georgetown education. They only take A students. Besides, he went to a school whose actual mascot is a bulldog. Georgetown’s way too cool for just one: We have the bulldog, AND the Hoya name. He’d get confused…Georgetown Bullhoyas? Plus, with George in the name of the school, he’d get too bigheaded (I see now this has happened regardless)
