chances for HPME?

your ECs definitely show an interest in medicine/science, as well as your classes. I would think that that would help you a lot…SAT I’m not too sure about though…but what do I know?

Im at northwestern now; I’ve heard the HPME program maybe soon eliminated. Though it may just be rumors.

They already eliminated one of the honors programs. I think it makes sense because they don’t need to use honors programs to attract the best and brightest anymore. Also, they unnecessary lock up seats for students when they could give the same seats to students who are most qualified at the end of four years at Northwestern.

I don’t think your SATs are competitive (maybe average, but not above average) for Northwestern, not just the honors program. So I suggest you save chances threads until after you retake the SAT. If you’re biology undergrad, I suggest you retake Bio SAT2 as well. But your ECs are excellent, so I think with better SATs you have a really good shot at Northwestern.

sat’s need to be at least 750 on all subjects or something. especially sat II’s. i wanted to do it, but as my highest was a 650 on all sat II’s, i couldnt even qualify :l

but with those grades, you could be accepted as a regular student like me :)

m0nkies, do you mind posting your stats for northwestern prospective students? thanks

The way application process works is you send in a card with your gpa, SAT, and SAT II’s and maybe one or two other things, then they decide if you’re good enough to even apply. While you have tons of great extracurriculars, I can’t see them sending you an application. You usually need to hit a 1500 cutoff or whatever it is with the new one, 2200 or so.

if you don’t believe i got in…

cant forget im asian :l
3.8 (7?) unw gpa
sat I - 2000
Sat II - 650 IIC, 670 USH, 670 chem

i was never a good test-taking person. gotta get beter for mcats :l

intern at kaiser, hoag hospital, western medical center
piano at regional, state, 1 supposedly nat’l level
all-southern for percussion
percussion section leader
alot of scholarship from music
hardest courseload (adv premedical studies, ap’s everywhere, 5’s on most of them too)

= double degree bio and piano performance

lucky i got into northwestern. got rejected at jhu, duke, dart, prince, harv. got in at all uc’s except la, but i never intended to stay in CA. that’s a portion that i remember from the top of my head. lots of other medical stuff, but it adds up. lots of piano stuff, but i wont go into specifics. my grades were in a downward trend (straight a’s fresh, 2 b’s soph, 4 b’s jun, b’s , 1 c’s, few a’s senior :)), but as i had so many ec’s, i guess that balanced

The key to getting into HPME is not necessarily via Stats or EC’s. You need to wow, i mean really WOW them with your HPME statement. When you do so, you will most likely be offered an interview. Interviewees represent about 10% of the applicants. From there on, you’ll need to wow, like really WOW them during the interview. They’ll eliminate maybe about half or little under that and accept maybe around 60 people. Somewhere around 45 will enroll at NW and go into HPME. I know this from personal experience. I got the interview though I’ve never volunteered at a hospital or done any medically-related work. However, this probably hurt me somewhat during the interview. So I didn’t WOW them during the interview.

But I’m also not a NW admissions connoisseur by any means as is everyone else who’s posting to these chances questions. So all this advice should all be taken with some grain of salt.

m0kies, are you doing the HPME program?

HPME looks for 750+ SAT scores across the board, so you might want to improve on those.

heck no. i just answered the guy who asked for my stats cuz i looked like a longshot for nw

“HPME looks for 750+ SAT scores across the board, so you might want to improve on those.”

-You don’t know what you’re talking about; this is not true!

This is straight from the mouth of an HPME interviewer. Just because you know one person who got in with a 700 or something doesn’t mean the guideline isn’t true. Besides which, 750’s aren’t even that impressive. A 1500 old SAT is just slightly above the median score at HYP, and with HPME being slightly more selective and the emphasis on math and science ability, it’s not much of a stretch for them to expect 750’s. An 800 SAT II Math IIC is like 93rd percentile, so a 750 certainly isn’t very impressive to HPME either. Also, why do you think they make you fill out that card with your GPA and SAT scores? So they can make cutoff decisions based on those.

I happen to know several who are in the program with lower scores than that. You don’t know what you’re talking about, point blank. I’m not saying that the program is not looking for high test scores, I’m saying that those random numbers that you give are not true.

The average 2 years ago was about 2300 on the 3 SAT II and 1535 on old SAT; some of them do score lower than 750 per section but they are not the majority (assuming the stats these days are about the same as those two years ago).

That’s fine…… However, I happen to know at least six people in one year who have scores lower than 1500. Out of 40 people, I’d 15 say that’s quite a bit. My only point is that prospective students with slightly lower test scores should not be discouraged from applying; it just doesn’t make any sense. The world of college admissions is not so cut-and-dry.

If average scores of 770, the word of an HPME interviewer, and the fact that applications are sent out based on GPA/SAT information don’t indicate that they “look for scores of 750+” then I guess there’s nothing left to argue about.

I agree with the whole “those with slightly lower test scores should not be discouraged from applying.” I got into Northwestern w/ a 560 Verbal! haha! you just have to prove to the admissions committee that you make up for your scores in other areas (i.e. in my case…extracurriculars w/ writing, solid essays, and being a published author). SATs, in my opinion, don’t mean anything. Yeah, I suck at taking tests…but what does that prove in life?
