HS freshman aiming high (humorous)

My HS freshman announced yesterday where he wants to go to college…Stanford, as it satifies his top 3 requirements:

strong engineering program

good football team

school colors are Red & white

It took alot to not burst out laughing, as his grades have been less than stellar this year. (yes, homework does need to be handed in on time and counts towards your grade…). One of his other college goals is to swim - he’s a good HS & local swimmer, but will seriously need to pick it up for Stanford to even consider him.

I explained that Stamford was one of the top schools in the country and he really needs to buckle down if he is serious about this. The positive is this is the first time he’s ever mentioned college…maybe we are turning the corner!

Your post made me giggle …And if Stanford doesn’t work out then maybe University of Wisconsin or University of Nebraska will fit the bill - they meet all of his requirements too!!!

RPI, except for the football thing would have to change to hockey.

OK, I admit, a couple schools the kids have looked at have turned me off because of the school colors :D.

Boston University
well, except for the football requirement…

NJ Mom: Our state flagship’s (and my alma mater) colors and red & white, the engineering school is strong and the football team…2 out of 3 isn’t bad…football is offset by dear old mom & dad paying in-state tuition and you may have a WINNER!

I don’t know about NewJersey, but if you live in the South football is non-negotiable!

His sister goes to Rutgers and he loves the Rutgers pool, however the stupid decision to drop men’s swimming a while back is problematic to the list of basic requirements (which I’m sure will evolve…). We have a few years to work through the list, but this was the first time he ever mentioned college!

[School Reports & Transcripts : Stanford University](http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/application/freshman/transcripts.html) says:

So there is hope if he shapes up in 10th grade after a mediocre 9th grade… (not a lot, since Stanford is a “reach for everyone” school)

NC State University
good engineering school
good football team in a good conference(ACC)
colors are red and white
weather is great…added bonus

Had a HS freshman student at least 15 yrs ago that informed us he was going to Syracuse. Problem is, he had about a 20% average in all academic subjects.

When I communicated this pronouncement to a colleague who knew the student in question, he replied, “The only way “XXX” is going to be an Orangeman is to get a produce job at a supermarket!!”

My son told my sister he would pick Wisconsin over Stanford- he was a Badger.

University of Louisiana. OK, engineering is ho-hum (except Petroleum Engineering, we used to be very good). And we served as the practice squad for most any football team in the region… But the food is great :)

For good engineering AND good football, Ohio State…

I don’t think you should laugh. My C- 8th grader went to MIT—announced he was going to do that at the end of 8th grade, and then started doing what it took to get there. Use his desire to go to Stanford as the start of a discussion about what he needs to be doing. Most colleges could care less about 9th grade if 10th and 11th are strong, with excellent SATs.

Indiana- football may improve, but basketball is awesome. Has the swimming, too!

If he’s okay with crimson and white rather than red and white, the University of Alabama would also fit the bill. It offers men’s swimming, has a strong up and coming engineering program, and has an excellent football team with 14 National Championships, 2 of which were in the last 3 years. It also has an elephant as its mascot.

Sometimes the littler things in life are those that make us the most happy. I lucked out in choosing a school whose colors I enjoy wearing and has my favorite animal as its mascot.
