HS Graduation Ceremony Music Thoughts?

So, my son is graduating, and of course they will have the pomp and circumstance, but the class was asked to select additional music, probably to make both them and their parents teary-eyed. This has become a hot topic, but the students final decisions are due early this week.

One of the students offered up “Time of Your Life” by Green Day, which I like a lot. There’s a contingency of students that want Rap (which leaves me a little cold – maybe reggae – a little “One Love” wouldn’t be bad in my mind). My son likes John Lennon’s “Imagine”.

Anyone have some good song ideas that I could pass on?

Thanks!

“Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.

Real tear jerker at the senior chorus tribute was “I Will Remember You” , Sarah Mclachlan. They played it while the baby picture then the senior picture was shown in video.

my daughters graduating class entered the theatre to my suggestion-
the opening from Road to Nowhere by Talking Heads-

 • this part*

it segued into Shining Star by EW&F.
ex-chorus

[quote]
Youre a shinig star, no matter who you are
Shining bright to see what you can truly be
That you can truly be

[quote]
It was great- they even had “search lights” on the kids and the crowd to add to the effect.

I’m surprised that your school allowed this. Many school systems don’t allow any use of baby pictures because of the potential for embarrassment for adopted children who often don’t have baby pictures of themselves.

I like John Lennon’s Imagine, too. The OP’s son has good taste. But if the school officials listen to the lyrics, they might veto it on the grounds that it expresses views on religion.

You mean “Good Riddance”? Yes, that would have been appropriate for mine ;)

How about “In My Life” by The Beatles?

“I’m surprised that your school allowed this. Many school systems don’t allow any use of baby pictures because of the potential for embarrassment for adopted children who often don’t have baby pictures of themselves.”

They used any early childhood picture actually. They were not all baby pictures. When the request went out it asked for any early childhood or baby pictures. They have been doing this for years and no issue raised.

All good stuff, keep it coming! For each post, I’m running over to Youtube and listening to the song. Excellent selections!

Marian – school won’t veto anything unless it includes a vulgar word or threats of anarchy, so probably anything by the Sex Pistols would be out.

Audiophile – yes, Good Riddance, which I’m guessing about 70% of the students are thinking and 30% thought it was the time of their life. Won’t tell you on which side of that fence son is on. . . !

Oh, one more thing – still remember our song – graduated the year the Beatles disbanded, so needless to say our graduation song was “Let it Be”.

I recently went through an exhaustive search for songs for our grade school graduation slide show. We finally went with “Good Riddance”, “Keep Holding On” (theme from movie Eragon by Avril Lavigne), and John Mayer’s “Waiting for the World to Change”. I was surprised that the kids adored “Keep Holding On” more than “Good Riddance”, my favorite. We also considered “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson and “Unwritten” (the boys groaned when I previewed that song for some reason…but the girls loved it). With older kids you can probably go with older songs because they know more music. Younger kids only seem to respond to current hits. Try a Google search for “graduation songs”.

One thing I learned…no song is perfect for everyone. There are always parts of lyrics that don’t fit the occasion or seem to apply to only a subset of grads. You just have to go with what feels right and know that no one will probably fuss over every word. You should Google the lyrics to make sure there isn’t anything really offensive though. Have fun and congrats!

PS- We burned amazing DVDs for the kids on iDVD on the slide show we made from iPhoto. The intro was absolutely incredible…and sooooo easy!

“My Wish” by Rascal Flatts is a great graduation song.

Great suggestions. We also had the childhood pictures before the ceremony started.

After the ceremony, the graduates marched out to music from Star Wars, Episode IV - The music that was used when Princess Leia awards to medals to Hans and Luke, which then segued to the Star Wars theme. Don’t laugh - it was quite appropriate and brought a smile to everyone’s face, including the kids. (Although my ex and I commented that it was amazing that the kids recognized a piece of music that was written before they were born!)

At my son’s graduation he sang “This is the Moment” from Jekyll and Hyde and a classmate sang “Whenever You Remember” a Carrie Underwood song, I think. I don’t think he felt at all that this was “the greatest moment of them all” but it was not a bad song for the occasion.

Alice Cooper: “We don’t need no education!”

(Sorry. Couldn’t resist.)

they’re singing “you raise me up” at my friend’s H.S. graduation this year. it’s causing a bit of controversy because one of the seniors died in a snowmobile accident in february over midwinter break, and that was the song played at his funeral, and people don’t want to think about such a sad event during graduation.

My high school’s doing something different this year; seniors recorded greetings/thank yous to parents and they’re playing those as we walk in. Kinda different. I’d rather have Good Riddance though. lol.

“For Good” from the Broadway show “Wicked” is perfect!

True Colors - Phil Collins version (even if it was used in the Kodak commercial…it’s a great graduation song.)

dmd wasn’t that Pink Floyd?
[Alice sang “schools out”](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDw8vgu0A7s)

And of course Eddie  ( pearl jam) sings
"I’m questioning my education
Is my education who i am now?

Puppy lover, im curious why they chose the same song, Im sure many of the students attended the funeral,- 4 months ago?
Its not like there are’nt any other songs to choose from

OK…now we get to the fun ones!

“When I think back on all the cr*p I learned in High School”…Paul Simon singing Kodachrome!
