Hi, I’m a current high school junior, and i’ve just started brainstorming my possible college list, and I’m about 50/50 on whether or not to apply to a school with SCREA. My main passion is in math, and so I was thinking of either MIT or Princeton if I were to apply SCREA, but I am aware that the possibility of getting in is very low, and I might be waisting a valuable early application spot for a more realistic school. It would be of great help if you could read through my stats and give me advice on whether or not SCREA would be worth trying, thanks in advance!
Demographics: Asian Male (rip)
School : I go to a STEM magnet school which has consistently been ranked as one of the top schools in the country
GPA: 4.45 Weighted (School only calculates weighted gpa)
SAT: 1590 (800 math, 790 english), taken once
SAT Subject: Math II (800), Chemistry (770)
AP courses:
Freshman: Calculus BC (5)*
Sophomore : Chemistry (5), Computer Science C (5)
Junior: Physics C Mechanics (?), Physics C E&M (?), Stats (?)*, US History(?)
- I would like to note that these tests were taken self-studied, as I wanted to accelerate through and take all the math courses available, and after getting the 5 in calculus bc, I was allowed to skip to multivariable calculus in my junior year. I am on track to have taken Multivariable calculus, linear algebra, Complex Analysis, Differential equations, Probability theory, and Concrete math, by the end of senior year, which are all of the post-ap math courses that my school teaches
Awards:
- 3x AIME qualifier (I was on track to qualify for the USAMO, but was canceled due to COVID)
- ARML Tiebreaker
- ARML winning team
- PUMAC 3rd place team
- Duke Math Meet 2nd place team
- A bunch of other smaller math awards, some national but aren’t as prestigious
- Some small writing awards, not huge
- USCACO Gold (again, not huge)
- Latin NLE gold 3x
EC:
- The main commitment was being a member of my school’s math team for all my years in HS
- I was the head coach of two math teams, one ES and one MS, which participated in the Mathcounts and ARML competitions respectively
- I also volunteered at several math competitions including the one that our school hosts, as well as other local events
- I played JV soccer for two years and this year was planning to play varsity but was canceled due to COVID
Summer stuff:
- Freshman year summer I took chemistry honors in my school’s summer school (something that the majority of the students do), in order to take AP in sophomore year
- Both sophomore and junior years I am participating in math programs, this year’s will be virtual due to COVID. Both programs are quite selective, and I chose it over other internships and stuff because I just like math lol
So that is roughly my stats. It’s heavily geared towards math stuff, but that really was my only big passion through high school. I would like to note that both my recs should be good, and my counselor knows my efforts to try and accelerate through math courses, so she will probably write a good rec as well. Please let me know your opinions, and suggest schools that will be a good fit for me academically!
