This is for those of us who have decided to change our ways and do everything we can to transfer into some fine colleges.

What do you suggest? Clubs & sports at CC, getting a job. Any other extra things that help?

I wasn’t a major slacker in HS, I took honors courses and thought that would be enough to get into top schools…not with a 3.0GPA however. I admit I kind of just settled for less in HS and never thought of the bigger picture.

When I attend CC in the fall I’ll definitely join PTK, get involved with the honors program, and look into the school newspaper and some other volunteer organizations.

I guess it all depends on what you mean by “fine college”, but I was a slacker in HS something along the line of a C- average if I recall correctly, now Ive been accepted to Va Tech and JMU. Other than being a non participating member of PTK, I havent joined any clubs or participated in anything related to the school. The thing that got be in was my GPA, and at least in Virginia GPA is what is the main factor for transfer students.

My “fine colleges” are some California private colleges (unlike my friends who plan on going to the same old UCs or top Cal States). The privates look at the whole person. I’m especially interested in USD, Loyola Marymount, and Chapman. and I only have some volunteering and a club under my belt so I want to do more than raise my GPA.

I had a 3.3 GPA out of hs and was frowned down upon by many for being a “slacker.” I didnt get my game on until 2nd semester junior year but it was too late. so how did i make up for it at CC?

1) i took summer courses
2) i took 9 classes first semester
3) im taking 7

ill be transferring to UCLA/CAL after this semester despite only being in CC for a year (i graduated from hs in 08).

my advice? set a goal, make a plan, and go for it. ec? be as active as you can.

oh and mytime, ptk doesnt really matter that much unless you are a cabinet member. just a fyi.

I was a slacker, and went to CC thinking I could get away with it there too. I was sadly mistaken. I cleaned up my act since then but I still only have a 3.4 GPA and a lack of math which probably gives me zero chances of transferring to a school I really wanted to attend.

But that was my own fault, so there’s no use in whining about it.

One good thing I did do through HS/college is keep jobs, which I thought schools wouldn’t care about. Turns out quite a few of my applications I’ve filled out recently asked about work experience. Go figure :)

And I don’t care what anyone says. if you don’t have the GPA, you don’t have crap. Extras are wonderful and all but make sure your GPA is sparkly and shiny above all else. Some people forget that.

You just have to set a goal for yourself and stick to it. I was a huge slacker in HS and I decided to change in CC. Now I have a 3.5 GPA not great because I still have that slacker in me lol so I got a C+ in one class but i did great in my other classes. Just keep on remembering what got you into CC and try to change it.
