Huge problem

So I am a junior in High school now. I excel in school I’m basically in the top 2 percent of the school. Here’s the problem my SAT score are EXTREMELY BAD I have no idea why they are so horrendous. Does anybody have any advice on how I could pull up my SAT score in 6 months. Is there any hope for me? PLEASE HELP! BTW is it possible to pull up my SAT scores by 500 points in this time period. My PSAT score was 1450 CR:550 Math:450

Are you measuring your SAT score off of you PSAT score? The PSAT scores are usually 70 or so points lower than their corresponding SAT scores (Ex: A 145 PSAT~1520 SAT). It’s easy to raise your SAT score a little (I raised mine by 180 over the span of 4 months), but it’s hard to raise it significantly. Princeton Review and other test-prep agencies offer courses that teach you little tips and tricks on how to out-think the test writers, but my best advice would be to simply take the test sometime in the next two months, and evaluate how hard you need to work from there.

The maximum score for each section is 800, so no you can’t pull it up by 500 points…

I was talking about my overall score, but thanks anyways.

You first need to assess why you did so poorly on the tests. Do you have test anxiety? Could you do the problems, but ran out of time? etc. Once you figure out the why, then you can work on fixes. If the problem is time, stress, anxiety, etc - you will benefit greatly by taking a lot of practice tests in a timed environment. If you really just don’t know the material, then you need to do a lot of self studying.
If I were you, I would also get some practice books for the ACT tests and see if you do better on that test.

rentacop: Um no actually I haven’t taken the actual SAT. The scores i was talking about were just based off of the first time I took the PSAT. I don’t understand why I did so badly though. I don’t think this shows my potential at all. I was very dissapointed.

jbourne: I think that definitely might be the problem, but I have no idea how to fix it. When its not timed I do so much better but I definitely take MUCH longer. I just really want to get a high SAT score, and I definitely feel in the dumps right now. UGH!

One of the prep classes might be useful for you. They teach you strategies that you might not have been aware of - such as if you can narrow down to two choices, but don’t know the answer, then guess and move on. If you can’t narrow down to two, then leave it blank, etc. There are also different strategies for the critical reading - reading the questions first, then the passages, or vice versa. Reading the entire passage, or just a paragraph at a time, etc. You need to find what works best for you. For math, the problems start out easy, and get harder as you go. So get as many of the easy ones done as you can quickly. An easy one gives you the same amount of credit as a hard one!
Anyway, I can’t stress enough to take as many practice tests as you can and work on time management. Maybe do a 25 minute section at a time. Then every few weeks, do a full 3 hour because brain fatigue definitely sets in and you can lose focus.
Good luck to you.
