The question is how my math/science interests have influenced the way I interact with the world…
Just the phrasing of the questions suggests that they are looking for a serious, thoughtful essay about how I see science and math in my daily life. I tried to write a heartfelt essay about the beauty of numbers, but somehow what came out was cheerful irony and an essay about how numbers have hijacked my brain. Is this appropriate for an application essay? (This is for a summer program, not college)

Well… I dont know how summer program’s admissions essay are supposed to be different or not from a college essay. But, Usually admissions essay are supposed to give people are look about you. If that essay is truly how you feel, and it is well written then I would stick with it. You could try putting yourself in the shoes of the admission people, look at the essay, and ask yourself “can this person think? Is he/she unique? Is he/she good for the school?”

As with college app essays, I think they’re looking to meet you, not to get a uniform answer about how numbers saved your life one time at band camp. If you’re a funny person, let it show. At the very least the people reading it would have a laugh to break up a day of reading what’s probably hundreds of monotone essays on string theory.
