Humpback whale tastes a kayaker, spits out kayaker

Humpback whales normally gulp water that contains food and use their baleen to filter the food as they push the water out. Food for them is typically plankton and small fish.

Wow. And now I’m singing “Jonah and the big old whale”, a song from a sunday school musical program.

Kayaker here–was astounded when I watched it. Yikes. Closest I’ve come is some dolphins swimming by, and possibly under, the kayak. That was a close enough encounter for me!

Two years ago, a cape cod man was swallowed by a whale. He was a lobster diver so perhaps a bit more understandable situation. Iirc, there’s a film about it.

What a story to tell! Terrifying in the moment, but pretty awesome overall. So happy no one was injured.

I’m rethinking going kayaking in the arctic next summer…

Is that something you are really doing? That’s so cool!

Heck, there are humpbacks in my Bay sometime, and they haven’t gotten me yet (never seen one while kayaking, yet. But have seen them from the beach twice).

Whales playing truth or dare …

As part of an arctic cruise, yes.

We went kayaking on an Alaskan cruise. Don’t rethink it … it’s well worth the very small chance of becoming a prophet!

Ha! I’m still doing it this year. And I kayaked off Antarctica too.

Well, I imagine the kayaker’s friends have a new nickname for him.
