Daughter is scheduled to fly out of Norfolk Va on Friday at 9 am. Earl is scheduled to visit Norfolk about the same time.
Any advice? This is for a weekend trip to Denver. If the airport closes will they try and reschedule her? She is flying to Denver on Southwest but flying back on Monday on American. She won’t lose her Southwest $$ as they will hold it in her account - but what about her ticket on American?

I have suggested to her that she look into getting out Thursday evening, not sure if that’s possible due to limited flights.

American is less than accomodating – especially since the first leg is booked on another carrier. To use that leg without penalty, she needs to get to Denver so she can fly back on that specific flight. I think.

I recently had a HORRENDOUS experience attempting to change an American flight. All I can say is that they have their rules and they don’t care what your circumstances are. They would make no exceptions for any of their rules – despite the fact that I had booked over $5000 worth of business with them just for the month of July 2010.

Good luck. Safe travels. Call American today and see if they can be nicer to you than they were to me.

We’re facing the same thing. Dorms open Saturday, classes begin Tuesday. She’s flying from the middle of the country to Boston with one stop in Philadelphia.

My husband purchased trip insurance, but I just read the “exclusions” clause and noticed natural disasters such as hurricanes are excluded. So I don’t know if the trip insurance will be worth anything?

As one who missed a vacation to Italy due to the volcano in Iceland, I am pretty sure that if the airline cancels a flight for any reason, you get your money back or a rescheduled flight.

college qu: Unless Logan gets a direct hit and is out of commission … she should be fine to fly in on Saturday. I don’t think Boston is in direct hit range of this one … stranger things have happened, but IMO it’s unlikely.

About three years ago I had reservations to fly into Harlingen, TX for a 90th birthday party. About a day and a half before I was supposed to fly out, Hurricane Dolly hit the Rio Grande Valley and the Harlingen airport was closed (for about four days). I called Southwest starting 2-3 days before Dolly hit, asking them what my options were. They were about willing to do anything for no extra charge. I didn’t necessarily want to go down there early and be there during the hurricane, but they offered me options of flying into San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Austin or Houston and waiting it out. What I ended up doing was flying into Corpus Christi on the day I was originally supposed to leave, renting a car there and driving down to the valley. The airport reopened the day I was supposed to fly home, so I returned on my originally scheduled flight, but did have to incur a one-way car rental fee since I didn’t return the car back to Corpus.

collegeq- I agree with cnp55–Philadelphia and Logan should be fine. Maybe rainy, but my guess is that the storm, should it come that far west, would just affect the Cape or Nantucket/ MV. The plane can always use a more interior route, over land.

Well, flying out today/tonight is not going to work. Gonna see if she can get a bus to Baltimore and change to BWI tomorrow…
Southwest posted this on their website:

My kid got put on a Sat am flight to Denver. Yay.
The airport in Norfolk is closing tonight at 9 and will reopen at 2 tomorrow - maybe she can get on an earlier flight tomorrow evening.

Both Old Dominion University and William and Mary University will close tonight and remain closed tomorrow.

I’ve been checking the W & M website, and as of now it’s still saying that they expect to be open as usual tomorrow. They’re closing all buildings except dorms as of 11 PM tonight and asking students to remain in their residences throughout the nighttime hours, due to the expected fairly high winds. Have you heard otherwise on the local media, JustAMomof4? I know that sometimes they’re in a hurry to add info to a developing story that isn’t quite accurate. But if it’s true, my d will be thrilled to have a day off tomorrow. ;)
