Hurricane Ike Essay- good or bad topic?

My family had to evacuate for hurricane Ike and we had extensive damage to our home. We had no power for 10 days, school was cancelled for 2 weeks and food was scarce. rebuild took 3 months. No financial hardship for us, but alot around us…
How can I use this experience to write an essay for the applytexas prompts? I am a senior at an early college high school and would like to go to either texas a&m, or utdallas to study accounting. I will have completed my associates degree in business right before I graduate from high school.
Essay A-I think I want to use my mom, she helped me get started with the business(see below)
Essay B, the hurricane???
Essay C the early college experience- other students in the classes had no idea I was still in high school- that is until the professors point it out-publically…I like this because I don’t think admissions officers have any real idea what an early college high school is all about.
OR the new business I started last year selling headbands to friends, then it escalated to having them in an online store, in 3 local retail stores, one in Austin Texas and also being used by 2 drill teams as fundraising projects. This shows good entreprenerial skills, but how can I talk about the Early College experience too?

A couple of thoughts:

Essay A - A lot of applicants will be writing about their mom, dad, grandmother, grandfather, etc. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write about your mom, but you have to make it good. What are some ways your mom has influenced your life other than through typical maternal behavior of making sure you are clean, fed and happy? Helping you start a business can be a good one. Try to come up with some observations about your mother that other students who write about their mother aren’t likely to have in their essays.

Essay B - Yes. Hurricane Ike is a good topic. Watch your tone when you write this one. A whiny tone can make this an annoying essay. If you write about how the experience helped you grow as a person and you maintain a mature attitude throughout the piece, it could be very effective. Reflect on how you felt when food was scarce for two weeks. Did it make you appreciate food, shelter, etc. a little more than you used to? Could you imagine being one of the millions of people in the world who go hungry every day? You could also mention some details of the financial hardship you witnessed and talk about how you helped (or wished you could help) your neighbors get through it.

Essay C - A business is a great topic. Admissions officers love to see this type of initiative. If you were studying business as part of early college you can tie both your business and early college in under the common theme of learning about business at a young age.

If the business thing really took off, you should consider applying to this: [Young Entrepreneur Awards for Graduating High School Students | NFIB](http://www.nfib.com/yef/yef-programs/young-entrepreneur-awards)

No matter what you write about, remember that your goal should be to show the college who you are as a person as well as what you are interested in.

Thanks for the input. I think my mom has taught me alot of non-so-typical life lessons so that really will be a good one. Not only about getting the business started and mentoring along the way, but encouraging me to travel internationally by myself, and showing me how to be strong in my christian faith. I think that essay will go well.
I think essay B will be about how I think educational choices are important. I would then like to talk about my early college experiences and howI wouldn’t have had them in a normal high school setting. Is that going to answer the question of what is an important issue to me?
Essay C I will talk about my business and how it came about. Is it okay to put in a link to my website or is that too pushy?

Thanks for posting this link to the NFIB Entrepreneur scholarship page. I applied and just found out today that I won a scholarship! Good luck to all others who are waiting for a response.
