Hurricane Irene?

How is the hurricane effecting the Duke campus?

A couple of large trees came down on East Campus, including one right near the West Duke building. No one was injured, although they did evacuate the building.

Otherwise, it’s been windy with off-and-on rain all day.

do you have electric power?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall seeing very many utility poles while I was at Duke. Hopefully, this means that Duke’s power delivery infrastructure is mostly underground which would make them less susceptible to the hurricane.

Duke has its own electrical grid and somehow basically never loses power. There were several times when Durham lost power, but Duke was unaffected in the past. I recall Duke giving some shelter to those temporarily seeking refuge in the past after large power outages in the area. Based on what I’ve heard, Raleigh was at the very edge of the storm and Durham was largely spared.

I imagine that most of the research buildings and the hospital would have plenty of backup generator capacity because of the patients and the need to keep those -150/-80/-20/4 freezer/fridges in those labs going. Wouldn’t want to lose all your patients or cell lines or glycerol stocks because of some pesky squall.

learn the difference between affect and effect

^^^that is not the worst typo I have made on CC!

You should be ashamed of yourself
