@SouthFloridaMom9 My husband is picking up my son and his roommate tomorrow from CofC. They’re predicting it to affect the midlands and the Upstate as well.
Stay safe, @carolinamom2boys
@carolinamom2boys Good luck! Thinking of you . All the best to those in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina bracing for Irma.
That’s strange. On my way home today…NPR was saying folks were evacuating TO the Atlanta area. Now some of,you are saying that’s not such a good idea?
Best wishes @carolinamom2boys
I’m part of the Latinx program here so I have a lot of friends from Puerto Rico. As of about 20 minutes ago, we managed to hear from everyone who is in PR or who has family there and everyone is OK. I’m so thankful.
Of course, my heart is absolutely broken for those who aren’t as lucky.
@thumper1 The concern seems to be for Savannah and Coastal Georgia.
Well, you’ll know which properties can take a punch! My friend lives on HHI and had minor damage from Matthew. The golf courses near her home (Sea Pines) were under water, the boats in the harbor were grounded and damaged, but for the most part the Island did pretty well. Lost lots of trees.
Right now she’s evacuating and hoping for the best. Again.
@sevmom - I am content where we live in suburban MD for now - with coastal/beach/golf vacations. DH is older and is fixated on retiring (maybe working pt) on Hilton Head, or maybe Naples. He is not a happy camper tonight watching this hurricane and thinking about all of those who will be impacted and if his dream is going poof. Hoping we can still travel to Hilton Head later this month.
My 81 year old aunt is staying put in Boynton Beach - that’s south of West Palm Beach. She lost power for over a week in a hurricane 10 years ago - and lost her roof tiles. She lives alone in a gated 55+ community - so I guess she has neighbors to turn to if needed. Ironically, she just decided last week to move to an independent living community and put her house on the market!
Your scenario of staying in Maryland and vacationing regularly in coastal areas sounds like a pretty good compromise but I’m not your husband!
The more I watch on the news, the more anxious I get for everyone in the path of the storm. I feel literally sick inside. Really hoping this storm defies the predictions and weakens somehow.
I’m not so sure that Atlanta will stay completely unscathed, especially if the track stays in the middle of Florida.
Any idea how long it will take to drive from SE St. Pete to the Tampa airport on Friday? Mom - needing wheel chair assistance is on a 11:10 am flight and my sister wasn’t planing to pick her up to take her to the airport until 8:00am I managed to talk them in to leaving at 7:30 but I’m not sure that really gives them enough time. Thoughts?
No problem in ATL. The center of the dying storm should pass to our east. Just wind and rain here. Along the Atlantic coast of FL/GA/SC I imagine there will be quite a few tropical tornadoes pop up as the storms rotate inland.
Apparently Savannah may not take such a hit now? The track shifted about 5 p.m. In nice news: the Atlanta Braves are offering weekend game tickets to evacuees, with valid ID.
@3scoutsmom I think it’s impossible to know given the impact of the pending hurricane on traffic but why risk missing the flight. I’d easily double the normal drive time and probably triple it. I’d rather cool my heels in the airport with a good book than risk missing the flight.
Ha ha cute story that I saw on news - Harvey and Irma Schluter (sp?) just celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.
The Braves better give them some free parking, free hotdogs and free beers on top of that! That’s where a lot of the expense is these days with going to a baseball game.
@3scoutsmom Your sister hopefully is monitoring the local news for potential delays between St. Petersburg and the airport. She should also monitor the airport website for delays ( and hopefully there won’t be any tomorrow morning related to your mom’s flight). And , she should stay with your mom until the flight has taken off .
Good luck!
S & DIL made it to Orlando at 3:30 am after leaving WPB at 10 pm last night. S said traffic, even at that hour, was terrible. They have to check out of current hotel tomorrow and have the option of another hotel in Orlando or a hotel in Tampa, both until Tuesday. Third option is get back in the car and keep driving north, but DIL is seriously uncomfortable in car for that kind of drive at 8+ months pregnant. My former SIL is a travel agent and tried to find them a room just over the border in Georgia, but no availability, so they would have to probably go on to Atlanta and at that point might as well go on to Chatanooga, her hometown. I hope the forecast becomes more definitive by tomorrow so they can make a good decision. Still crossing my fingers for everyone in the path of this storm that it fizzles a bit!
My mom has dementia pretty badly. Her sister was able to get my mom out of Tampa airport tomorrow so she will stay with me indefinitely. KUdos to SW airlines - apparently they made all tickets from Florida $99? Her sister and her husband are packing up their animals and driving as far as they can towards Missouri, where a brother lives.
Hopefullly everyone will be fine, but I think after Harvey people are paying much more attention.
