Hurricane Irma

@3scoutsmom, my aunt was talking about leaving at 630 for a 10:50 flight. They are not that far from the airport.

Great, the FL residents can watch the Braves get pummeled, just like their homes back in Florida …

I tried to get gas tonight and couldn’t (only one place) hopefully I can get it tomorrow.

@2VU0609 , From what you are describing, I vote for getting back in the car first thing in the morning and getting to Chattanooga, if there is family there (not that my vote should count) . Good luck! And congratulations on a new grandchild!

@2VU0609 I wonder about Macon or Albany?

So are classes still in session in all state of Florida?

No. All schools in Florida will be closed Friday-Monday.

I just saw public schools and colleges are closed tomorrow.

Ugh ! My ex-husband, husband and I all worked to get former mother in law out of Naples and heading north this afternoon…ex wasn’t able to get her a flight out to NY area so we tried ( and succeeded ) to get her a flight to Atlantic City. My husband is in Fla for business and is leaving tomorrow morning out of Tampa. Despite the lack of fuel, he got gas and was on his way to Naples to get her… I booked her a flight. got her room in the hotel at airport …everything was good to go and she refused to leave ! Stubborn old broad

^^^^^Wow. Frustrating I’m sure.

@1214mom I would suggest arriving at the airport AT LEAST 3 hours prior to departure. Unless she has global entry, it may take that long to arrive at the airport and go through security as mandatory evacuations go into effect beginning at 6am tomorrow. Traffic may be horrendous. Watch BayNews 9 or WTSP online early tomorrow morning.

It’s likely to come thru/near Columbia SC yet we are where the coast will evacuate to, so I imagine Atlanta is the same. Main part of evacuation is usually focused on storm surge areas. Hugo did lots of damage here and up to Charlotte, but not enough to warrant evacuating from either of those places to further inland. Wind damage and power outages are worst issue. Hopefully it moves so fast that churning and dropping rain (and flooding) will not be so much.

Right now lots of SC is on eastern size which is tornado side. yuck. I guess the chance of it moving east enough to just skirt the coast is off the table but hoping as it makes landfall the speed drops more than they say now.

@Nrdsb4 , yup…we all worked hard in a short period of time to get it done. It was not easy for my husband to get gas to take a 3 hour drive to get her , not including the traffic jam to get back to airport. My ex has 4 siblings , yet this type of thing usually falls squarely on his shoulders. My husband is a saint, but then so is my ex
Oh well…we tried

Lje62, that is awful! And incredibly rude. I’d say that nobody risks anything more for her, she’s on her own. And I hope it was her money, if anything was lost. You all bent over backwards to help het, if anything happenes, it’s not on you.

@3scoutsmom it is probably a 45 min drive in typical traffic but I’d arrive as early as possible. I’ve heard airport parking is a premium so allowing more time is advisable.

A friend of mine’s adult D lives in Miami and has gone to stay someplace that is more inland and possibly farther north: Coopersville? Cooperstown? Something like that. her mother is not terribly reassured. :frowning:

A friend of mine lives in Clearwater. Don’t know what he is planning to do.

@lje62 Which is why I can’t understand why anyone would vote against providing relief funds for disaster victims. There should be no politics about it.

Much family drama. Just learned that some Florida relatives drove here to MD to escape storm, but did not ask my 81 year old aunt if she wanted to ride up with them! They just called her to let her know they were safe in MD! What? They did not think to include her?

My in laws were on a cruise to the Bahamas out of Port Canaveral. Hows that for timing!! Cruise ship returned to port today, 2 days early. I wonder where they take all those cruise ships in Florida.

I’m guessing…out to sea…away from the stormy weather.
