Hurricane Irma

Out to sea - just like the Navy does with its ships.

@sherpa Any contact from your brother?

Storm Surge Warning has been issued for South Florida. Danger of life-threatening inundation in the next 36 hours. Well, 35 hours, as it was issued an hour ago, 11 pm Thursday East Coast time.

None at all. It turns out his wife is on the mainland visiting her mother and so far she’s been unable to make contact with him, and also unable to get a flight back to STT. We’re assuming he’s safe but without power or cell service. In the words of Tom Petty, “the waiting is the hardest part.”

I have cousins in Miami, they are sheltering in place. I’m a nervous wreck.

Also just heard Barbuda is going to get hit by hurricane Jose. The residents don’t have any shelter on the island! It was decimated by Rita. I’m praying so hard for them.

I’m hoping Barbuda is being evacuated as the prime minister said it would be.

Just heard Terminal at Miami airport closed due to police shooting, as if things weren’t crazy enough at the airport with folks trying to get out.

Most people in the Miami area are being instructed to shelter in place, right?

Latest model run (00Z) still hits Miami but is more to the east up north, right along the coastline of FL, before dissipating over GA. Our medium-range model is totally on drugs, with the storm curving away from FL. That MR model flip-flops wildly from run to run and I don’t trust it.

Edit: the two most recent recon reports show that the eye is open on the SE side. This is weakening as the eyewall gets replaced and Hispaniola takes its toll. Cuba is up next and will continue to limit the storm. Once it turns north into the open ocean south of Miami it will strengthen again.

Everyone I know in Miami has secured their house and moved north. I feel awful listening to the new from Barmudas . It is an unreal feeling to have the weather so calm now, but could be so,awful soon.

^^Interesting that the model is showing further east. The news is showing it more to the west, moving directly over the center of the state.

Gosh. More disasters. 8.0 earthquake on the southern coast of Mexico and tsunami warnings!

Mr. B just read me the news… when it rains it pours. :frowning:

Honestly, to get an elderly person to an airport, any airport on a busy day I’d get there hours early. If the driver has to park, that’s going to be a nightmare. All spots, even handicapped ones, will be full anywhere near the airport. Security will be long, even with a courtesy wheel chair transport.

My daughter’s leaving for MCO at 3 am. It’s usually an hour’s drive, but who knows what the highways will be like even at that time, and then they have to find parking. I sent them a link for parking around the airport and HOPE they decided to book a spot. Many of the places were full.

MIL lives in our second home in Huatulco Mexico.right next to the epicenter of the earthquake. Got a text from her saying she’s safe and the house sustained only minor damage. She lived through the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City which killed over 5,000 and said this quake was stronger. Fires, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes. It’s feeling biblical. Maybe it’s time to reconsider that atheism thing I’ve been doing!

@Sue22 glad she is OK

Rita or Irma?
This is all so frightening. Prayers for your brother, @Sherpa, and for all those in Mexico with last night’s quake.
@“Cardinal Fang” here are the areas of Miami under a mandatory evacuation http://www.miamiherald.com/news/weather/hurricane/article171780902.html
My husband’s cousin just had surgery in Jacksonville, and is back home near Tampa. He is not able to travel. I am hoping they can get to a shelter. His wife just posted that they are looking for help getting their shutters in place, as she also hs health issues and cant do it alone. So scary.

I am increasingly worried about our flight out of Atlanta early a tuesday Morning, and being on crutches makes it doubly problematic. Probably need to wait for more updates of the storm track before looking into changing the flight. Stay safe everyone.

Looks like it’ll be downgraded to a tropical depression by time it gets to atlanta. But I guess that’s still going to mess up flights. Are the allowing free rebooking because of delays. Could you put it off a few days?

I don’t know yet if they are offering a free rebooking, but that is what I would want. Our first grandchild is going to be born Tues or Weds at the latest-- we want to get out there!
