I think it makes sense with at least the front load type of washers! The water inlets have valves that only open when it is in operation; there are no other holes for the water to enter the drum. The doors latch well… Not sure about dishwashers and top loaders because the doors may not latch securely when they are not in operation.
Turn off the circuit to the dishwasher…it will lock just fine…but won’t actually operate.
Many DW will not lock securely when not in operation. Test yours!
So currently we are predicted to get 25-40 mile hour winds on Monday.
I am not sure I know what that means.
@veruca, that is not bad. We get that range of wind speed here occasionally, and it’s no big deal.
Just saw this FB post from SIL from 30 mins ago.
“Ok…on the last flight outta Ft. Myers !!! Headed to Detroit with a plane full of people and doggies aboard!! Everyone is haggard and nervous and praying. Very difficult to leave…”
Thanks @MaineLonghorn - I was going to turn the patio table upside down and maybe put the chairs in the barn.
@partyof5 – your comment reminds me about a couple of kids resettled from New Orleans to Denver, who attended my daughter’s high school after Katrina destroyed their community. The families were sponsored by a local church. The move was very hard on the high schoolers, but the community went out of its way to make them feel welcome, and to help them adjust to the new school & city. Both of the students ended up staying in Colorado, going to college here with local scholarship money raised by the church & community. My hope is that the kids in Florida also receive similar help. This is shaping up to be a humanitarian disaster, and I hope we learned something from Katrina.
For extra precaution, place our items in plastic bags before putting them in the DW or washer.
Snopes says it doesn’t work to put valuables into the dishwasher to be safe from flooding. Dishwashers leak from the outside when flooded.
Our friends from Naples headed home from MA to secure their house. Now that the storm is headed that way, they have gone cross state to their niece’s place which is built to hurricane standards. Now it seems the southeast of FL won’t be hit as hard.
The destruction down there is going to be unimaginable. So sad, so stressful, so difficult.
25-40 mph winds are not too bad. Make sure you take inside any items that can be blown away!
CF, that’s what I thought about dishwashers.
@katliamom thanks for the example. I’m concerned about the Houston students as it seems Irma has sucked the oxygen from the Harvey hurricane. It seems there may have been more devastation in Texas than may occur in Florida as they seem much more prepared to deal with hurricanes.
Here’s the link. Snopes: During a Hurricane, Should You Store Valuables in the Dishwasher?
(spoiler alert, No)
The contractor was here doing some work so he helped me put the patio chairs and umbrella under the deck and turned the glass table upside down. I took my knee scooter outside (with his help) and tied the tomato plant cages to the deck railing. Just have som small plant pots in wheels that we can either leave or I can hopefully get DH to put on the grass. Friends who have 2 houses right on the beach on the west coast near Bradenton are currently in Orlando, and may come up here and stay in our house while we are gone. They would need to decides so they can get here by tomorrow.
Husband flew out of Tampa yesterday morning…the flight had several pets on board . He was surprised to see the plane he was getting on, full of people getting off in Tampa
I don’t have a husband to count on to do things around the house, so I budget and hire handyman to do things for me. Some how it is a lot less stressful than when I used to have to nag my ex to do things. The best thing is after I pay them, they are gone.
@oldfort , I am now sold on the European Model. Hoping everyone in Irma’s path gets through this safely.
@oldfort, thanks for the laugh. It is less stressful isn’t it?
Gosh darn, Irma’s expected track moved west of us instead of staying at least just east. But inland, near an evacuation center… Got outside stuff moved. Hurricane windows/doors. Discovered the Publix 1/2 mile away closed at noon, not 8 pm like the local news just said around noontime. Didn’t need anything. Friend went earlier today and said they had put butter and other perishables in the walk in already. Meats still out- she and a neighbor went to get meats for grilling tonight.
Sorry Texas, I did not donate to you- funds will be needed locally.
This was not on my bucket list but I get to add it to my series of life experiences, yet another I could have lived without…
