Hutton Admissions ?

The IU website lays out scores/GPA required for an automatic invitation to the Hutton Honors program. With my ACT score, I'm a few hundredths of a point low on GPA to get an automatic invitation. I took a college calculus course and got an A. The grade for this class, if weighted as for an AP calculus class and included in my GPA, would pull my GPA up to the required number. However, my high school doesn't include grades earned elsewhere in the official GPA. Is there any way around this? If I could get my guidance counselor to write a letter stating what my GPA would be if this class were included, would Indiana accept that? If I can't get him to do that, anyone know the chances of getting in if one petitions?

Are you still in high school, or are you an entering freshman?

I'm a rising high school senior, applying for fall 2012.

I'd contact Hutton. They might be able to admit you if you raise your GPA to the required number after your first semester of your senior year. For example, Kelley allows students to be directly admitted after they've applied up to a certain date. A friend of mine didn't have the ACT score to be directly admitted, and then took it in like January. He got the required score and was directly admitted.

I would contact Jill Baker by telephone or email and ask her what to do. She may tell you that you can be accepted based on that calculus class, or just tell you to just petition. Jill Baker: / 812-855-3570

This is the first year that Hutton has stated on their website the minimum numbers needed for automatic acceptance. It is also the first time that they have allowed anyone to petition prior to entering IU, as far as I know. Apply to IU as soon as possible (if you haven't already) to improve your chances of being accepted to Hutton before the Fall 2012 entering class gets so large as to make you more anonymous to Ms. Baker. More than 900 students will be admitted to Hutton for Fall 2012.

Thanks, I'll contact Jill Baker. I submitted my application on August 1 and my scores and college transcript should already be there, but I can't get a high school transcript or the guidance counselor form sent until school starts up in a few weeks. I assume that will still be early enough. How long does it typically take for Hutton to fill up?

In 2009-10, Hutton had more than 4,000 students, which was about 1,000 per class. In their 2009-10 Annual Report, they said they were trying to cut down to about 650, and made admissions standards tougher to try to achieve this. There is no set number; if you qualify automatically, you get in. But if you petition, you should do it as early as possible. If they feel a few months into the process that they are getting too many students, it will probably be harder to get in by petitioning. Petition before a lot of people get in automatically, and it will probably increase your chances.
