I accidentally skipped a math class. Am I screwed?

@lindky8 Haha yeah, they didn’t explicitly say validation, but at least I have proof that they said I shouldn’t take it. I’m waiting on UCI and Cal’s response though, since a follow up from UCSD said that they might have different policies.

I’ll be interested to hear the response, for sure. Congrats thus far!

@lindky8 UCI’s response came in.

"What are 1C, 1D, 2A and 2B equivalent to at UCI? The link that you
included does not identify your college as having these courses…

Regarding Math 1A/ Math 2A, it is in your interest to take the class at
your CC. Taking it out of sequence is okay. It will cover everything
that you already know, but at least this could be an easy A for you!

The ASSIST articulation (for UCI) only has Math 1A and 1B as prereqs, which is probably why she’s confused. So UCI wants me to take it, but I’m not sure since it wouldn’t count in my units or GPA while she says it’s an easy A…

I think what she’s saying is it’s in your best interest to take it, so you solidly understand the material. I agree that you should take during summer or whenever. As I said you don’t get credit but it firms up your knowledge.

I didn’t read anything saying your app is in jeopardy missing it. She also seemed to be validating AP exam placing you in Calc 2 as per your campus.

I think you’re fine. Worse case, as I think someone mentioned, a UC recommends you take calc 1 later.

@lindky8 I actually got a followup email because I wasn’t entirely clear on the first.

"I just spoke to our Associate Director and she said she will allow you to
take a higher level math than Math 1A since your community college allowed
you to go straight into Math 1B. Therefore, please take your colleges Math 1D,
which is equivalent to our Math 2D.

Also, just fyi, Math 2A/ UCI Math 3D is not required of our Software
Engineering major. Therefore, if you took this class, it will simply be
counted as ‘elective’ credit. If you are truly TAGging UCI, you may want
to reconsider taking this class. However, on the other hand, if you plan
on TAGging a different UC or applying to a different institution that
requires Math 2A/ Math 3D then I would understand why you plan on taking
this course at your community college.

Hope this info helps. Good luck to you!

Jessica"

So I guess that’s that. Cal is the only college that didn’t send an email yet, but going off of UCI and UCSD, I assume it’ll be fine. Guess this wraps up the question and answers it for anyone else in the same situation! Thanks to everyone once again, now I can actually refocus on my classes haha!

I called it: they would honor the CCC AP placement. Yes!!! Just kidding. But I am happy I analyzed it properly. (I don’t always, haha.)

I’m happy you copy and pasted this though, because I was making assumptions, it’s a tricky area, and it’s good to get more detailed clarification.

@lindky8 Yup, thanks for your help (and sorry for having this thread go on for so long haha!). It’s nice to have it clarified since it appears each UC will handle it differently (UCSD will adjust for equivalency, while UCI just requests a higher math course to be taken). I’m going to hang on to these emails so I’ll have proof later on because they seem generous, or I’m just relieved!

Yes, it’s great you have the written verification. When I looked at only berkeley it seemed to me you were OK, so hopefully you will get the same general response. It’s good to know, even if these emails do not apply to every student in every situation. At least I feel there is a foundation from which they start.

Be sure to post if you get in! I wanna know…

@lindky8 I’ll be sure to update next year! I’m TAGing to UCI and applying as a Math/CS major to UCSD, so I think I have a fair shot if I maintain my high GPA. The only challenge will be UCB, but that’s a given, haha!
