<p>I am going to school for two reasons.
I went to a vocational school and received Financial aid and VA benefits of being married to a 100% mentally disabled veteran. A Jekyll and Hyde Bipolar husband.</p>
<p>Now I am going to school online in the hopes this will work.
One to relearn what I lost in a TBI in 1990 and two because I will get financial aid from the VA that will help me to build a jewelry business that I really love and that is something I can do with the limitations that the TBI puts on me.</p>
<p>We moved to NC and we hear you are out- of- state- tuition even though you now have a drivers license a year lease on a home etc.
ouch that cost.
oh yes and No we will not defer your books like the other school did. pay up front.

then after jumping through hoops on filling out the financial aid forms the school required. We are told you are denied financial aid. based of course on our income. I am the guardian for the Vet and all his money goes to him. I have no income.
so instead of considering me as 0 income based on taxable income they ring us up based on nontaxable income.

I get that getting the VA benefits covers school just barely but I wanted to be able to have money to invest in my business . There really is no way I can ever work with my disability but I could find enjoyment and income in the jewelry business.
so going to school makes my brain total mush and makes it difficult to be there for my husband as he needs me and now I won’t get any money.
I hope you ladies see my pain and I can receive some consoling and not criticism. if not. ah well.

<p>If you haven’t LIVED in North Carolina already for one year…before enrolling in college, you are NOT entitled to instate tuition. It sounds like you haven’t been there a year yet.</p>
<p>And wanting college financial aid money to nest in your business? I’m sorry but this is NOT the purpose of financial aid money.</p>
<p>I’m sorry if I sound unsympathetic, but college financial aid is for college costs. Instate tuition is for instate residents.</p>
<p>I hope you can complete a degree and move on. But please don’t expect a college financial aid award to finance your business.</p>
<p>I have several friends who are running small handmade jewelry businesses. They did not need college courses to run their businesses. Both had taken some continuing education classes on jewelry making, and then just got creative themselves. They sell their jewelry at various craft fairs and shows, and online through Etsy. </p>
<p>You don’t need to take college course to start a jewelry business. If this is what you enjoy, then get a small inventory and go to a craft show or flea market, and see what you can sell.</p>
<p>Totally agree with thumper. There is no need to spend money/time/energy on college courses if your goal is to start/run a small handmade jewelry business.</p>
<p>PS–Financial aid is for education, not as start up funds for a business.</p>
<p>When we moved to NC, my son enrolled at Central Piedmont Community College and we did pay out of state tuition for one year. I think it was still cheaper than the resident tuition we had paid at Union County Community College in New Jersey. If the out of state tuition is prohibitively expensive for you, then wait one year before enrolling. I was surprised how easy it was to get the in-state rate after one year of residency. My son is now at UNC Charlotte paying in-state tuition. It is a real bargain. TBI= Traumatic Brain Injury caring for a bipolar husband sounds like a difficult situation.</p>
<p>It sounds like you could benefit from a personal finance class or a basic business class. You should be able to find a free or inexpensive seminar or class in your area. I would check your local community college. Or, Google your county or town plus certain key words like personal finance, starting a business, etc. If you care to share your town or county, I can find some links for you.</p>
<p>if you want to go to college, then you need to wait a year to be instate. It seems that you think that because you signed a “year’s lease” then that counts. No, you have to be there for a year…paying taxes, etc.</p>
<p>Your H’s money isn’t only going for him. You’re living on that money, too. That’s why your H’s money counts.</p>
