I am a D1 college Basketball player and I want to step away from my team

I am a sophmore at a D1 College Basketball Program in the WCC, my past couple months have been really crazy, with some stuff going on at home and stuff going on at school as well. The stuff going on at home has really impacted me and my family and I want to be there for my mom and sister. This year I haven’t been playing and I didn’t play that much my freshman year. I played more my freshman year then I did this year and I am the last one in the rotation. I hate basketball so much and I feel like i’m doing so much work and not getting anything out of it. It seems like my coaches don’t have a plan for me and I’m just here for no reason. Coming out of high school, I had A10, ACC, and other P5 offers and now I don’t even want to play basketball anymore. One of my friends told me about their friend stepping away from the team and doing online school. I want to try and step away from the team for the rest of the year so I can go home and do online school while helping out my family and then do lots of training while at home and then enter the transfer portal. Should I consider that? I know a lot of people go through not playing and I’ve been through situations like this before but it has never been this bad to where I dread every day.

Yes, it sounds important to take a break or get counseling with how to cope.

I hope you can talk to your coaches and get support to take time away to help your family.

Please talk to your coaches. They are used to helping players in these types of situations. If you don’t feel you can do that, hopefully there is an academic advisor or similar person on campus you have a good relationship with and can confide in. Is it possible for you to redshirt this year and keep the door open to returning if you change your mind about the transfer portal?

It is important to prioritize your mental health but please don’t just walk away without getting the facts. Talk to your coaches, seek out counseling at the school, and discuss options with your advisor. You need to understand any financial implications of leaving college now. And if you want to leave, you need to find out how to formally withdraw so current classes don’t turn into failed classes and impact future options.

“I hate basketball”…

This is a statement that might be directly related to your home /school situation. You were aware before going to this college that playing time is never guaranteed. You were interested enough and good enough to get to this level. Huge accomplishment. As above. Talk to your advisors /coach etc and seek the mental health support you might need. Good luck.

If you are able to talk to your family about this…parents, guardians, etc. that would be helpful and important. Also if you have a spiritual advisor, many of the WCC schools are affiliated with a church, you may want to seek advice and counsel as well. I would of course speak to coaches, mentors, and counselors at the school or outside of school as well.
